As you all know, we are currently learning about landforms and bodies of water in Science. The standards actually read that students should be able to ILLUSTRATE Earth's saltwater and freshwater features and ILLUSTRATE Earth's land features. I created an activity where the students had to pretend they were an illustrator in partnership with a popular non-fiction author. Their assignment was to submit their illustrations for each page, design a cover, and then they also had to create a signature and choose their best page for the website preview. (See assignment below) As we were working, they were a little frustrated with their signatures. They have been learning the fundamentals of cursive letter formation with Ms. Mitchell, but they are still fine tuning the art.
Hope you enjoy our pictures...they did such an awesome job!

Hello, everyone! I hope you all had a great LONG weekend. We will be playing "catch up" this week, as Mock testing and the snow day got us a little off schedule. We will begin on our science unit on landforms and bodies of water. Students will have trading cards with illustrations and definitions of each landform and body of water they are responsible for. Our assessment on this information will not be until next week. We have already started our new unit in Math on area and perimeter. Students completed their assessment on measurement and line plots today in class and we have already started practicing with area and perimeter. Their DREAM homework sheet with be problems practicing this skill. Remind them that Area is the space inside and will always be units^2 -- I find the area by multiplying the length x width. Perimeter is the distance around the outside of the space and will always be a simple unit like inches, centimeters, yards, meters, etc. -- I find the perimeter by adding up the sides. There are many wonderful videos and tutorials for area and perimeter as well.https://jr.brainpop.com/math/measurement/area/ https://jr.brainpop.com/math/measurement/perimeter/ http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/measurement/perimeter.htm There is also a great lesson and game on Math Playground:http://www.mathplayground.com/area_perimeter.html We will stick with Math 4 Today #20. Students should have these completed already, but we will review them and complete the study guide on Wednesday and Thursday. I have attached it for your convenience, along with the DREAM sheet.
We will also have another Turner Timed Test this Wednesday! We have been practicing in class and students are aware of their score when she came in December. Their goal should be to beat their previous score. (Their December test should be in their binders behind the Math tab if you would like to review it with your child -- if you are unable to locate it, let me know and I can send you their score.) Below is a picture from the December Turner Timed Test. Students loved having Mrs. Turner in the room and getting their scores back from her! I think this was a great motivation for them to do their very best! Please remember to complete the survey provided by the School Improvement Council. It is very brief -- only 6 questions and you can use the following link to access the survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X3BTPCR
Our 3rd grade newsletter is below. Graded test papers and Dojo reports will be sent home today. Please let us know if you have any further questions! Good morning! I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend! This week, our main focus will be Mock Testing. We will test reading today, ELA tomorrow, and Math on Thursday. These practice sessions will not be timed. With that being said, it is difficult to say exactly what we will be able to get completed in class this week. If time allows, we will begin on our science unit on landforms and bodies of water. Students will have trading cards with illustrations and definitions of each landform and body of water they are responsible for. Our assessment on this information will not be until next week. Last week in math, we worked on measuring and completing line plots with the data. I was amazed at how quickly these guys caught on to measuring to the nearest 1/4 inch. This is usually something very difficult for 3rd graders. Since they did so well, we are going to move on to begin area and perimeter. I will share this illustration with them to help them remember the difference between area and perimeter.
I have intended to share this earlier, but I keep forgetting. This week's issue is really awesome, so I wanted to be sure to finally share! Our school has a subscription to Scholastic News. With this subscription, we have access to the digital version via the app. This digital version is AMAZING!!! I have the app downloaded on all of our iPads so that students can access it at school, but I thought you all may be interested in accessing it from home as well. You will need to begin by downloading the app: If you are interested and once you have downloaded the app, send me a quick email or comment below and I will share our class password with you by private message. Once you have access, your child will be able to enjoy the following: Not only is this great practice with reading and understanding nonfiction text, but it also has great science content each week. This week's issue shares information about predators, which we will discuss later in the spring during our unit on life science and food chains.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if you run into any problems when downloading the app! Happy e-reading!!!
Hello! The School Improvement Council has asked me to share the following information...... In an effort to improve communication between school and home, please take a few minutes to complete a 6 question survey. Use the following link to access the short survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X3BTPCR You child has a flyer with this information as well. I am also sending home important information regarding the science fair. Those documents can be downloaded below. Third graders are not required to complete a project, however, they will receive extra credit if they choose to participate.
Today, we met and worked on our new data pyramids. Each testing window, we work with students to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses. Students identify a topic at which they are "great", "Ok", "Almost get", and "Don't know how". With each of these areas, they then identify strategies for continuing to improve and grow with the topic they selected. We then display the pyramids across the front of our room -- students, teachers, administrators, and guests can then view them. I am always amazed at the students' awareness of their strengths and weaknesses. They are always extremely accurate! In Science this week, we are finishing up our discussion on fossils and moving on to discuss natural resources. Students will complete a reading comprehension with this information as a classwork grade for this unit. Brain Pop, Jr. has a great video that discusses natural resources: https://jr.brainpop.com/science/conservation/naturalresources/ In Math, we will continue practicing our multiplication facts, but we are moving on to focus more on measuring to the nearest 1/4 inch. On Wednesday, we will begin using those measurements to create and organize a line plot of the data. LearnZillion has a great lesson that reviews both of these concepts: https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/6309-collect-and-display-measurement-data The DREAM sheet will also practice both of these skills
We are working on Math 4 Today #19 this week. Our assessment will be on Friday as usual. I have included the study sheet above for your convenience. We will complete these in class on Wednesday. Third grade newsletter can be found below. Please pay attention to upcoming events. Our 2nd 9 Weeks awards program will be tomorrow at 8:15am in the cafeteria. Please also make note that we are out of school next Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Please let me know if you have any further questions and/or comments. I hope everyone has a wonderful week! We completed a lesson and assessment in Study Island today on fossils. The students loved being able to use the iPads and Study Island for science!
If students want to continue this lesson and practice from home, they are more than welcome to! The link to the lesson is: https://app.studyisland.com/cfw/login/ They will use the login and password found in their agenda and then choose the option "Science (Fossils - January 8, 2016)" for their lesson.
If your child did not bring their $1 please send it tomorrow or Friday.
Happy New Year, everyone! Oh how I have missed these kiddos! They have been AMAZING learners today -- I am so proud of their intense focus as we return from break. In Science, we are studying fossils this week. We will not have a "formal assessment" on this information, however, students will complete an assignment on Friday for a grade. Today, we read the PASS coach that goes along with fossils (behind their science tab of their binder), watched a Brain Pop, Jr video ( https://jr.brainpop.com/science/land/fossils/), and conducted a simulated fossil dig on the Promethean board (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/seamonsters/virtualdig/). They absolutely LOVED this and were 100% engaged. I had to promise them that I would provide the link so that they could do it again from home. Tomorrow we have a Watershed called "Them Bones" that will further explore fossils. Students will actually be able to sift for fossils and everyone is guaranteed to take home their very own fossil. Please be sure to send in $1 for your child to attend! For our fossil assessment, students will use iPads to work through the Study Island lesson on fossils and complete the assignment questions together with their group. Students will be given individual scores for this assignment. In math this week, we are continuing our focus on multiplication. This week we will introduce 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication. We spent a great amount of time during class today practicing this, so they should be able to complete their homework with no trouble. Encourage students to continue studying their basic facts with flascards, apps, timed tests, etc. Our next "Turner Timed Test" will be on January 27th. Students have their last test saved behind their math tab in their binder. They should work improve their score each time we test., The Math 4 Today study sheet, 3rd grade newsletter, and homework sheet can all be downloaded below. Report cards will be issued tomorrow. Please sign them and return on Thursday. Please let me know if you have any further questions!
