Happy Monday, everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Dojo reports and graded test papers are being sent home today with the 3rd Grade Newsletter. Please be sure to sign your child's Dojo report and return it to school tomorrow. A digital copy of the Newsletter can be found below.
Math / Science homework for the week is as follows:
This week in Math we are working on place value and the properties of addition. We will use the following resources in class...please feel free to allow your student to review them again from home: https://jr.brainpop.com/math/numbersense/placevalue/? http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/addition-subtraction/prop-of-addition.htm In Science, we are continuing with out study of the properties of matter. This week, we will move along to the measurable properties of matter: volume, mass, and density. As mentioned before, we will only do classwork grades until we complete the entire chapter on matter. I will notify you when we are ready for our assessment. Scholastic Study Jams has a fabulous video that goes along with this lesson: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/matter/properties-of-matter.htm The first tool is Power School. By downloading the app, you have access to your child’s gradebook, attendance record, and also lunch account balance.
For droid users, you can access the app in the Google play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.powerschool.portal For apple users, you can access the app from iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id973741088 I will post grades as I check their papers and you will have access to their scores immediately. Please remember that the actual graded paper will be sent home each Monday with the Dojo report and newsletter. The second tool is Class Dojo. Aside from using this as our behavior management, we also use it to track homework. When we check their homework on Friday, we will select “Turned in HW” or “No HW” for each student. If you have signed up for a parent account, you will be able to see this in their notifications. This will also show on the paper Dojo report we send home each Monday. The link to sign up for a parent account is: https://home.classdojo.com/#!/login Each child received a paper with their code for creating an account. If you wish to create an account, but do not have the code, please let us know and we can send it to you again. I hope that you will find these two tools very helpful in keeping track of your student’s progress. Although Ms. Mitchell and I do communicate this information on a regular basis, we understand that it can be helpful to have access to it at your fingertips! Please let us know if you have any questions or have trouble getting these set up. We’ve had a wonderful first two weeks and are looking forward to working with you and your children for the weeks to come!

Hello, everyone! Every Monday, you will receive a message from Ms. Mitchell and myself regarding the assignments and important information for the week. Ms. Mitchell's information can be found by visiting her link: http://mjmitche.weebly.com/blog (You can also find a permanent link to this site on the right side of my blog page). Below, you fill find a downloadable copy of our 3rd grade newsletter. (Simply click on the photo to open the printable PDF version.) A paper copy of this is in your child's mail folder attached to their Dojo report. (A sample dojo report is pictured beside the newsletter.) In future weeks, graded test papers will also be attached to this set of papers. Please be sure that you sign the Dojo report and return it to school tomorrow. This morning, we spent time copying down homework assignments in our agenda. We will do this each Monday for the entire week. I have included a picture below of what your child's agenda should look like (with my assignments...they may have added more with Ms. Mitchell). During the first nine weeks, I try to go around and check that everyone has their homework copied correctly, however, after first nine weeks, I try to hold them accountable and make it their responsibility. As you can see from the agenda, we do have math homework this week! This homework can be found in their EveryDay Math Journal. (pictured below) They should complete journal pg. 10 by Friday. We will check this together in class Friday morning. You can click on the journal page below to download a printable copy of this paper in the event your child cannot locate their math journal.
This week in Science, we will begin on our first chapter on Matter. I will send home a parent note tomorrow about the chapter. The chapter is fairly lengthy, so we will do several graded classwork activities along the way, but I will notify you before we are scheduled for our first assessment. I am estimating in about 3 weeks.
In math, we are focusing on rounding this week. Students have several pages in their binder with notes and practice questions. Once we have completed our lessons and classwork, I will give them a "checkup" to assess their mastery of the skill. Students will be able to use their binder notes to assist them with this checkup. Students may review rounding by watching the Brain Pop, Jr. video at the following link: https://jr.brainpop.com/math/numbersense/rounding/ South Carolina students are provided with a free subscription through our SC Discus virtual state library. If you are interested in your child accessing these videos with this subscription, please contact me for login information, as I am not allowed to publish it online. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the information provided, please do not hesitate to contact me! I know this is a great deal of information to process, but I am hopeful that with the information provided, you will be able to better assist your child at home. My goal is that we are able to work together as a team to ensure a successful 3rd grade year for your child! Thank you so much for sharing your children with me -- they are a blessing! Have a great day!
We've had such an awesome first week together. I promised the students I would share the links to some of the videos we used in class so that they could watch them again from home.
We have spent a great deal of time learning about engineering, as this is a new word for them. Resources used in class are listed below:
On Wednesday and Thursday, students became the engineer as they built paper airplanes, conducted trial flights, chose a modification, and tested their planes again.
In math this week, we watched a read aloud of the book Chrysanthemum. We did several math activities relating to our names. We compared name lengths, created a bar graph of the names in our class, and used a coding system to add up the value of our name.
We've had a great week getting to know each other and learn the routines and procedures for our school. Next week we will begin jumping into the content standards and will be on a regular schedule of classwork (binder work) and homework. Students will receive an EveryDay Math Journal 1 on Monday. Their homework sheet will be assigned from in on Monday and due on Friday.
Thank you so much for sharing your children with us. We have had such a great week and I look forward to all we will learn next week together!
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns! Thank you to those that were able to attend orientation tonight. We hope that it was informative and helpful in the transition to third grade. For those that were unable to attend or need notes, I have attached a pdf of the presentation we used to guide our discussion. Please let us know if you have any additional questions after viewing the slides. We will happy to help you in any way -- please do not hesitate to contact us!
Good afternoon! I wanted to share some information about this week, but decided NOT to send it yesterday since it was the first day and everything was a little hectic.
Another important task for the first week of school is signing up for Class Dojo. Students received registration codes in their folder from registration and another copy in their mail folder yesterday. If you have misplaced your instructions and code, please email me and I will be happy to send you another invitation. You will also want to sign up for Remind, our text service. You simply text the message @wes3bm to the number 81010.
Please remember that we have 3rd grade orientation tonight. We will share tons of valuable information that will help you understand the "ins and outs" of third grade. Please drop your students off to the cafeteria BEFORE 5:00 and report to Room 41 by 5:00. The book fair will also be open, so be sure to bring your pocketbooks! We look forward to seeing you tonight! |
My dream is to create a 21st Century classroom that encourages collaboration, integrates technology, and promotes thinking deeply.
