Hello! This week's homework can be found on the agenda page below. You can click on the photo to download an additional copy of the homework sheets.
A paper copy of the newsletter is attached to graded test papers and Dojo reports. Please be sure to sign these and return them tomorrow. In science, we are working on the first lesson of Chapter 4. This is about natural resources. Students will complete their lesson check with their group as we do with every lesson. I will continue reinforcing writing skills that they are working on with Ms. Mitchell. At the end of the week, we will also begin working on a text dependent writing prompt that correlates with our science content. I will model the entire process this week and we will complete a writing together as a class. Next week, students will receive a new topic, passage, and prompt and they will write their own. We are very excited about integrating these writing skills into science to help prepare them for the SC Ready test at the end of the year.
In math, we are discussing types of angles and 3D figures. We will use the following websites in class and they would be an excellent at home review: https://jr.brainpop.com/math/geometry/solidshapes/ http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/geometry/classify-angles.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/geometry/solid-figures.htm We are working on Math 4 Today Week #21. We will complete our study guide together on Thursday and our test will be on Friday. Please continue to work on multiplication facts at home. We are practicing these in class and our next "official" Turner Time Test will be next week. Their scores from their first attempt are being sent home today with graded papers. Students should set goals to improve their scores each time we test it. Tomorrow will be our last day of Mock Testing. We will be testing math. Please make sure that your student is at school on time and gets plenty of rest tonight. I know they will do great! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to comment below or message me through email. Thanks and I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

In order to help students prepare for the upcoming Science Fair, we conducted an "experiment" in class today and students completed a mini-board. This mini-board helped students understand the layout of their science fair boards and also walked them through the process of conducting an experiment. We used the BP Education website to simulate the lab. If students would like to go through this again at home for review, they can access it using the following student code: D3X228 Click on the picture to be directed to the website. Students recorded information from this experiment on their mini-board. This was taken up as a classwork grade. I made a copy of our class mini-board from the board and printed it for each child, so that they have a reference when completing their own experiment and science fair board. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns regarding the science fair.

If a student has 3 or more homework strikes at the end of the 9 weeks, they are not allowed to participate in the homework celebration.
This week in Science, we are beginning our next chapter on natural resources. This week will be an introduction week.
In Math, we are continuing our focus on quadrilaterals. Students are also working on Math 4 Today #20 with our test on Friday. We will complete the study guide together in class on Thursday. Tomorrow is also our first "Turner Timed Test". Mrs. Turner came around today and talked about expectations and strategies for their first test. This will be our baseline data for all future tests. Students will have 5 minutes to complete 100 multiplication facts (up to 10x10). Please continue to study these facts at home until your student masters them. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns regarding this week. I look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday! Students received order forms yesterday for science fair display boards. These orders are due by next Tuesday.
Third grade students are not required to complete a science fair project, however, students that choose to participate will receive two 100s as extra credit in Science for the 3rd 9 week.s I am sending home a packet of information about the science fair with students today. Please check their mail folder and use it as reference when completing your projects. You can also visit the link for my Science Fair Post from last year to get an idea of the end results: http://3-burnette.weebly.com/burnettes-blog/science-fair-selfies Please let me know if you have ANY questions or concerns! Hello! I hope everyone is having a great MLK, Jr. Day! I thought it may be beneficial for me to go ahead and send information for the week rather than waiting until tomorrow. This week's homework can be found below on the agenda. You can click on the agenda photo to download additional copies of the homework sheets. I will send home dojo reports and graded papers tomorrow with our 3rd grade newsletter.
This week in Science we will be reviewing Chapter 3 for our test on Thursday. We will complete the study guide in class and do several review activities. You can allow your child to review using QuizIzz by completing the following steps: 1. Open https://join.quizizz.com in your browser 2. Enter the 6-digit game code 078625, and click "Proceed" 3. Now enter your name and click "Join Game!" 4. You will get an avatar, and then see a "Start Game" button. Click it to begin! Also, remember you can review the vocabulary words using Quizlet. In Math, we are beginning our geometry unit. We will focus on attributes of quadrilaterals this week. We will also continue working on multiplication facts and begin our timed tests. We will complete Math 4 Today Week #19 - study guide on Thursday and test on Friday. For the next 3 Tuesdays, third graders will mock test beginning at 8:15am. On these days, please ensure that your student is at school on time, as many will be testing in alternate locations, other than the classroom. Another great resource to prepare them is offered through our state website - Tools Training. Students can see the format of the test, experiment with the tools, and see 5 sample test questions. You will need to access this link through Chrome in order for it to function properly.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns regarding the above information. I am looking forward to a great week of learning! Students completed their Winter MAP testing before leaving for Winter Break in December. We have been working to analyze these scores and conference with the students. We finished the final component of our Winter MAP Data conferences today in class. I have updated all Winter scores in each student's agenda. In the front section of their agenda, you can find their Dream Card on pg. 15. This is where we record scores and set goals for each testing window. Please let me know if you have questions regarding your child's scores. **During our testing window, the labs experienced numerous technology issues and interuptions with the tests. Mrs. Brewton announced to the students that if their scores were affected by the numerous interuptions and complications with the test sessions, that she does not want them to worry or become discouraged if their scores did not improve. We feel that because of these problems, we did not gain a "true reading" of the students' performance. Please keep this in mind when you are reviewing your child's scores. Students have also updated their stars on the data boards in the hallway. We used the following Winter percentile conversions to categorize their stars as "Approaching", "Meeting", and "Exceeding": Approaching: 197 or less Meeting: 198 - 206 Exceeding: 207 or higher
Please enjoy the photos I snapped as I was walking around conferencing with the students while they completed their pyramids. They always put so much thought into their choices and can always justify their decisions when I ask them. Good morning! Please remember that tomorrow, we have our 2nd 9 weeks awards program at 8:15am in the cafeteria. This week's homework assignments can be found on the agenda page below. You can download an additional copy of the homework sheets by clicking on the agenda photo. This week in science, we will be discussing landforms and changes in Earth's surface. There are several great Brain Pop videos that go along with this lesson. Please allow your student to review these from home: https://jr.brainpop.com/science/land/landforms/? https://jr.brainpop.com/science/land/slowlandchanges/ https://jr.brainpop.com/science/land/fastlandchanges/ We will also begin reviewing our vocabulary words for Chapter 3 to prepare for our test (coming up next week). I made a Quizlet of the vocabulary for students to review, you can access it from the following link: https://quizlet.com/_2ylmvj In math, we are continuing to identify patterns in multiplication and working on our multiplication facts. Please encourage your students to practice their facts every day! We are working on Math 4 Today #18 this week. We will complete the study guide on Thursday and our test will be on Friday.
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful break! Please review the agenda page below for this week's homework assignments. Remember that you can download an additional copy of the homework pages by clicking on the picture. You will notice that students should study for their Core Bites test #4 tomorrow. This is simply a review of material that we practice in class each day. Students received a study guide and we went over correct answers today in class. We are working on Math 4 Today #17 this week in class. We will complete that study guide together in class on Thursday and our test will be on Friday as usual. We are also working on multiplication and division word problems and number patterns with multiplication this week. Please continue to encourage your students to practice their multiplication facts by flashcards, our songs, apps, or practice tests. In science we are continuing our unit on Earth's features. We have reviewed soils today and students will work with groups to complete the lesson check-up tomorrow in class. I purchased this awesome set on TpT to go along with what the students are working on with Ms. Mitchell in ELA. I’ve been using it when students are writing in Science and we LOVE it! In the past, I’ve never really stressed “writing rules/expectations” since I don’t teach it, but I have realized that I am allowing the students to create bad habits. I can see a BIG difference in their writing skills and I also love watching them edit when they do get a ticket! When students work on lesson check-ups this week, I will continue to "patrol" for mistakes with capitalization, organization, punctuation, and spelling. Students have the above reminder on the board to help them with editing their work. Before break, we enjoyed a Watershed session from USC Upstate about soils. Students were able to participate in hands on activities making observations about rocks, minerals, and soil types. Please enjoy the photos below from our classtime. I am sending home newsletters, graded papers, and Dojo reports today. Please be aware that these reports are for the week leading up to break. Please sign these and return them tomorrow.
Report cards will also be issued tomorrow. Please be sure to sign the report card and return it by Thursday. Once I check for the signature, I will return it back to you for keeping. |
