Hello, everyone! Please remember that we will have a science test on Wednesday, identifying the science tools. We are working on Math 4 Today Week #3. I will send home a study sheet on Thursday and our test will be on Friday. Homework will continue to be the Fact Practice Log with their flashcards from their binder. (I will check for a minimum of 3 signatures on Friday.) We are also continuing to work on rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. We will have several checkup quizzes throughout the week. Please remember to sign and return Dojo reports tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns! Have a great day!

Dear Parent(s):
As we have finished up our first week of school with actual tests and homework, I wanted to let you know that you have access to 2 very useful tools that will help keep you informed about grades and homework. The first tool is Power School. By downloading the app, you have access to your child’s gradebook, attendance record, and also lunch account balance. For droid users, you can access the app in the Google play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pearson.powerschool.android.parent&hl=en For apple users, you can access the app from iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/powerschool-mobile/id973741088?mt=8 I will post grades as I check their papers and you will have access to their scores immediately. Please remember that the actual graded paper will be sent home each Monday with the Dojo report and newsletter. The second tool is Class Dojo. Aside from using this as our behavior management, we also use it to track homework. When we check their homework on Friday, we will select “Turned in HW” or “No HW” for each student. If you have signed up for a parent account, you will be able to see this in their notifications. This will also show on the paper Dojo report we send home each Monday. The link to sign up for a parent account is: https://home.classdojo.com/#!/login Each child received a paper with their code for creating an account. If you wish to create an account, but do not have the code, please let us know and we can send it to you again. I hope that you will find these two tools very helpful in keeping track of your student’s progress. Although Ms. Mitchell and I do communicate this information on a regular basis, we understand that it can be helpful to have access to it at your fingertips! Please let us know if you have any questions or have trouble getting these set up. We’ve had a wonderful first two weeks and are looking forward to working with you and your children for the weeks to come! Good morning! Let me begin by saying how truly blessed I am to have each of your children in class. I have already fallen in love with each of them and I know that love will only grow more and more each day as I get to know them better. A few important reminders… · At WES, we do not have “cubbies”, nor do we have “desks” that we can store things in, which means that their backpack is their main device of storage. They need their binders, homework folders, agendas, crayons, and scissors in their backpack at all times. This will enable us to use them both at school AND at home. If your child comes to school without their binder (for example), they are unable to fully participate and record important information, so they will lose a Dojo point for being unprepared. · We are beginning our math homework this week. Each student has a log inside a Ziploc pouch (HUGE shout out to Micah Kelley, Connor’s mom, for putting all of these together for me.) with their flashcards in the front of their binder. They are responsible for practicing and attaining a signature 3 days each week. When I check logs on Friday, if they do not have 3 days completed, they will receive a homework strike. Per our school rules, no homework also results in no recess. · Every Monday, we will distribute graded test papers and attach them to your child’s Dojo report (this will reflect behavior from the previous week). Please be sure to sign these and return them the following day (Tuesday). · Ms. Mitchell also wanted me to mention that library visits will begin next Monday. Students will be allowed to check out 2 books. If they finish these before our next scheduled visit, they will be allowed to return in free time to swap out their books. · We started MAP testing today in the Math Lab. Students will work on their MAP test on our designated computer lab days (Monday – Math, Thursday – Reading) for the next 3 weeks. Please join us in encouraging them to take their time and do their very best! In math, we are working on Week 2 of their Math 4 Today (inside their binder). We will do these in class and go over them together. Each Friday, we will have a test on this material. When you study these with your child on Thursday, be sure to sign their sheet for 5 bonus points on the test! Aside from Math 4 Today, we will be working on rounding in our Interactive Notebooks. Students are required to round to the nearest 10 and 100. Brain Pop, Jr. offers a great tutorial that may be helpful for your student to watch again from home: https://jr.brainpop.com/math/numbersense/rounding/ Please email me if you would like login/pw information. In science, we are completing our first scientific investigation involving jumping spiders and we will also explore tools used in Science. Students will have hands on practice with these tools, along with several activities learning their names. We will have a quiz on the tools on Friday. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. All documents for the week are attached for your convenience. Be sure to keep an eye on our class website {3-burnette.weebly.com} for updates and pictures of our learning throughout the week!
We started our interactive notebooks today. Ms. Mitchell donated some extra notebooks for those that didn't have one already to use so we could get started on our activities. We are still in the learning process, but we did successfully make it through all of the cutting and gluing!!! Hooray!
Thank you to those that were able to attend orientation tonight. We hope that it was informative and helpful in the transition to third grade. For those that were unable to attend, I have attached a pdf of the presentation we used to guide our discussion. Please let us know if you have any additional questions after viewing the slides. We will happy to help you in any way -- please do not hesitate to contact us!
We have been working to share information with each other so we can get to know our friends and build community. Students worked to complete a "Math about Me" outline that we are using to create a Math Window illustration. I enjoyed watching them measure each other's height and head circumference. They did a great job helping each other and working together to get their information. I also gave students the opportunity to come in front of the class and share their windows. I was very impressed by those that chose to share and their public speaking abilities! The students have been doing a GREAT job acclimating to our school and rules. They blew me away with their straight and silent lines today! We have also enjoyed getting our wiggles out by taking some Brain Breaks with Go Noodle! Today these guys rocked out to The Whip! Hope to see everyone tonight at 3rd Grade Orientation. I look forward to sharing some valuable information to help with your transition into 3rd grade. I have thoroughly enjoyed these first 2 days with both classes and I am excited about this school year!
One of my favorite teaching quotes is "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail". I've always had pride in my lesson plans and organization of school materials -- until I was recently introduced to "The Planner World". I have lusted over Erin Condren planners {https://www.erincondren.com/teacher-lesson-planners}, and I've been inspired by a colleague at my school, Nikki, as she shared her custom planner files with me {http://faithfamilyand5th.blogspot.com/}. I've become obsessed and have spent countless hours creating my own planner files. I had considered having it spiral bound, but the idea of not being able to add to or remove scares me a little. I recently came across the Zazzle website {http://www.zazzle.com/shop?rf=238288913629961850} and found out that I can customize my very own three ring binder......because let's get serious, this is my "baby" and she deserves WAY more than a Walmart view binder. So -- I bit the bullet and ordered a custom binder for my files. It came today and I feel like a kid at Christmas! I am IN LOVE with this binder...and the files inside. I cannot wait for school to start so I can put this bad boy to use! I am definitely not planning to fail this year! Check out my pics.....
