Hello, everyone!
Today has been operation organize day! We have been STRUGGLING to keep our binders organized so that we can utilize the information and resources inside easily during class. The school saved the day and purchased each 3rd grade student a set of new dividers. Today, I met with each students and helped them organize their binder! I think they are all feeling much better about their materials now! In Science, we are working in our unit on matter. We will not have a test on this until next week, but I went ahead and distributed flashcards today so that they can begin to study. ( https://quizlet.com/_1nrsjl )
Links that will be used in class are provided in the event your child wants to explore more from home! http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/solid_liquids.shtml
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/gases.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/changing_state.shtml We will do several other activities throughout the week exploring the different properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Students are responsible for knowing the difference in measurable and observable properties. We will discuss color, size, luster, texture, odor, temperature (warm/cold to touch) as observable properties and mass, volume, temperature, and length as measurable properties. We will not have an assessment on this until next week. http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/matter/ In math, we are beginning to study data analysis. We will concentrate on pictographs and bar graphs this week. The DREAM sheet (homework) is reflective of what we will do in class. Please remember this is due on Friday!
We will also begin working with multiplication a little this week. We will begin with the 0s, 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. These should all be "easy" for them, as they discussed them in 2nd grade and have experience counting by multiples of each. We will not begin timed tests yet, but it's always a good idea to start practicing early to get a head start!
Our third grade newsletter is below. Please be aware that our awards program is tomorrow at 8:15am in the cafeteria.
As usual. Dojo reports and graded test papers will be sent home today. Please sign these and return them tomorrow. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns! I hope everyone has a great week!!!

We had so much fun yesterday learning about the 3 states of matter. We completed the following activities:

Hello! Please be sure to read this message in its entirety, as we have some important changes of which you need to be aware. In Science this week, we will have our Sound assessment tomorrow. Students have flashcards and study questions to prepare with. I am attaching the files again for your convenience. Please remember you can also study the vocabulary with Quizlet: https://quizlet.com/_v42ro
After our sound assessment, we will begin our next unit on solids, liquids, and gases. If you would like to begin studying the vocabulary, you can access those in Quizlet by following the link provided: https://quizlet.com/_w850x In math, we are continuing to practice telling time and determining elapsed time. Please note that our homework has changed!!!
Homework will continue to be checked/collected each Friday. If a student does not turn in a COMPLETED homework sheet on Fridays, it will result in loss of recess and a homework strike. Since we do not have school this Friday, the DREAM sheet for this week will be due on Thursday. We are working on Math 4 Today Week #10 and our assessment will be on Thursday. The study sheet is attached and we will complete it in class on Wednesday.
Please review the newsletter and agenda notes below. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!
**Don't forget to have your child wear their class t-shirt on Wednesday for the homework celebration and spirit day. The WHS football players will be here Wednesday morning signing autographs! As I reflect upon my GAME plan I developed and followed throughout this course, I am very proud that I have developed a unit plan that directly correlates to the indicators I chose for my goals.
Indicator: “Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources” (ISTE, 2008). Indicator: “Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation” (ISTE, 2008). As I developed my unit plan for those course, I was able to create a “choice board” for students to use as they developed their means of presentation. This give students the opportunity to express themselves according to their learning styles, working strategies, and abilities. I saw students become even more engaged and connected to the content through doing so. The second indicator was reached through the use of my blog and by Skyping with others from outside our school. Building these relationships and including others as part of our learning has made a tremendous impact on our classroom. I love the idea behind a GAME plan. Although in this setting it has been used for professional growth, I think the concepts could easily be applied for our students. Students could use the plan by setting a goal, developing a plan of action, monitoring progress, and taking time to evaluate and extend almost any project based assignment they have. This framework could also be used for setting goals with MAP testing. This course has helped me to become more knowledgeable about the tools available for implementing strategies such as social networking and digital storytelling. “Schools should reflect the world we live in today. And we live in a social world. We need to teach students how to be effective collaborators in that world, how to interact with people around them, how to be engaged, informed twenty-first-century citizens” (Smith, 2007). By implementing strategies such as these, I am exposing my students to tasks that will be required for them to prevail in our fast changing world. My favorite “take away” from this course is the confidence I have developed in implementing the use of social networking in my classroom. Having a blog, Instagram, and Skype account for my classroom has really made me feel update and “in the know” for the 21st Century. My students just love it! I believe that by creating goals and monitoring through my GAME plan, I have developed a unit plan for teaching about food chains that will be exciting for students and also challenge them to be creative, explore, and push the boundaries for applying content knowledge. I can definitely see improvement! Their favorite way to practice is with STOP THE CLOCK.
Now that we have mastered telling time to the minute, we will now begin working on determining elapsed time. There are several great resources that go along with this:
In Science, we have started on our Sound unit. Friday and Today, we have been introduced to the vocabulary. Students already have their flashcards to begin studying. Remember that you can also access the flashcards and many study games by visiting our Quizlet Class: https://quizlet.com/join/tcUaGVjYn We will have a test on this on Friday.
Our third grade newsletter is also attached. Please remember that we have our Fall Festival tomorrow night. Other important information and dates are also included on the Newsletter. Don't forget to help out with my Donor's Choose project by voting through the Limeades for Learning contest put on by Sonic Drive Thru. It only takes a second to vote and you can vote EVERY day!!! Hello! This week in Science we will finish up our Force & Motion unit. We will have our test on Wednesday. Students partnered up and studied vocabulary flashcards this morning and we will complete the study guide tomorrow in class. Both documents are below if you need additional copies.
After our assessment on Wednesday, we will begin our next science unit on Sound. In Math, we are still working on telling time to the nearest minute. The students LOVE playing Stop the Clock -- it is great practice! http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/StopTheClock/sthec3.html We are working on Math 4 Today Week 8. The study guide can be found below. We will work on these on Wednesday. Please remember that students should complete their fact practice log for homework. These are checked on Friday. Dojo Reports and graded test papers will be sent home today. They should be returned to school tomorrow. Thanks so much for your continued support!
