Good afternoon! You will notice that there are quite a few more attachments that usual. Ms. Mitchell and I have decided to send out the agenda layout so that you can verify your student is copying down homework assignments correctly each week. You also have several study guides/sheets that I will discuss further below within the subject areas. DREAM homework sheet, Third grade newsletter, and I can statements are attached as usual. In Science this week, we will be preparing for a test on Force & Motion on Thursday. We will complete and review all attached documents in class, however, I am attaching them in the event you would like to study more at home. We explored the Steve Spangler website today and observed several of his experiments on Force. The children loved it, so I promised them I would share the link so that they could view more from home. http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments I will be creating a special link to this site on my website so that they can reference it as needed. The address to my site is: www.3-burnette.weebly.com Our Force & Motion test will be on Thursday and we will then begin our next unit on Sound on Friday with a fun diagnostic assessment to identify their prior knowledge about sound. In Math, we will be working on Math 4 Today #7. In the past, we have used the work from the week (in the yellow folder) as their study guide for the test. We thought it would be more helpful to have an actual study guide with specific examples from the test (using different numbers). We will send these home on Tuesday for homework and then go over them together in class on Thursday so that you can review for Friday’s test. Students who bring back a signed study guide on Friday will receive 5 bonus points on the test. Your signature is verifying that you have studied and reviewed the information with your child. We will continue working with time as our standard in practice. Students are responsible for telling time to the nearest minute and also solving word problems involving elapsed time. We will have a time summative assessment on Friday. Please remember that Dojo reports and graded test papers are sent home every Monday. These should be signed and returned the next day. Remember that you can check grades anytime by logging onto the parent portal or by downloading the parent app. If you do not know your child’s login information (it should be your email address), please respond and I will get the information to you as soon as possible. The app will also provide you notifications of grade updates, attendance, and also if their lunch account becomes negative. http://www.pearsonschoolsystems.com/products/mobile/parents/ Please let me know if you have any further questions. I enjoy the time I get to spend with your children each day and their enthusiasm for learning is truly a blessing. Have a great afternoon!

Good afternoon! I have attached third grade newsletter and DREAM homework sheet for your convenience. In Science this week, we will continue with our study of force and motion. We will learn about Newton’s Laws of motion and we will compare the position, speed, and direction of different objects. We will also conduct an experiment exploring how mass effects speed at the end of the week. I am including links for videos that we will watch in class: Study Jams 1st Law Study Jams 2nd Law Study Jams 3rd Law Please remember that the extra credit Force & Motion booklets are due by Friday. I will not accept any turned in late. I have attached the documents again in the event you need an extra copy. In Math, we will begin working on time. Third graders are required to tell time to the nearest minute and also solve word problems involving time. Students seem to do well telling time to the nearest 5 minutes, but often struggle when the minute hand is between numbers on the face of the clock. It is also a common misconception when solving word problems involving time that you can line up a vertical subtraction problem and simply subtract by borrowing across the zero. We will work on several new methods this week to help correct these misconceptions and provide them with new avenues for solving the problem. Telling time and determining elapsed time is very important for real-world application. Unfortunately, we live in a “digital world” and rely on technology to do the work for us. Students will still be required to use an analog clock to determine time. Please practice this concept with your child at home as much as possible. The following links will be helpful when reviewing at home. http://commoncoresheets.com/SortedByGrade.php?Sorted=3md1 http://www.brainpopjr.com/math/time/ Dojo reports and graded test papers will be sent home today. Please be sure to sign them and return them tomorrow. Feel free to email me or call with any questions or concerns you may have. Have a great afternoon!
I have distributed information today regarding an Extra Credit project I am offering for Science. Students have the documents in their red homework folders. Please see the attachments for further information. I have also included an example “drawing” for one of the pages. These projects are due by Friday, September 26th. Please let me know if you have further questions!
Good afternoon! I have attached important documents for the week. Dojo reports will come home today along with graded test papers. Please be sure to sign these and return them tomorrow. In Science this week, we are beginning our unit on Force and Motion. The Watershed Ecology program will be here on Wednesday for our classes. They bring many fun hands-on learning experiences to our school throughout the year. Please be sure to send $1 with your child by tomorrow for the program. (I sent home a notice about this last week.) We will be working on several activities throughout the week learning about force, motion, friction, gravity, Newton’s laws, etc. I am including links to the videos we will use in class. Please feel free to allow your student to watch them again from home as review.Study Jams Force & MotionBrain Pop Jr. Push and PullStudy Jams 1st LawStudy Jams 2nd LawStudy Jams 3rd Law In Math we will continue working with addition and subtraction within 1000. Students are now beginning to improve and show strong command of this particular tasks. I encourage you to have them practice at home. We will be practicing throughout the week at different learning stations in our small groups. We will have a test on this skill on Friday. We are also working on Math 4 Today Week #5 – assessment on Friday. The DREAM homework sheet continues to practice the same skill and will be collected on Friday. Please remind your students that if they do not turn in their homework, they will not be allowed to play at recess. The following link is an excellent site for printable worksheets and also offers “interactive worksheets” where you complete digital activities on your computer/tablet. Standard 3-nbt.2 is the standard related to addition and subtraction within 1000 – this link goes straight to the applicable materials:http://commoncoresheets.com/Interactive.php?Worksheet=Math/Interactive/3nbt2 Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
Good morning! I have attached important documents for the week. This week in Science, we are finishing up Chapter 1 of our PASS Coach that teaches about inquiry skills, using tools, and conducting investigations. Today in class, we completed and reviewed the Chapter 1 Review. (I have attached it for your convenience.) This should serve as a study guide for our test on Thursday. We will conduct another experiment together today through Wednesday, and then as part of their test, students will be required to fill in a scientific method outline (also attached) for an experiment I will present during the test. Excellent review videos are as follows: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/scientific-inquiry/scientific-methods.htm http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/scienceskills/scientificmethod/ http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/scienceskills/scienceprojects/ http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/scienceskills/makingobservations/ For math, we will continue with our study on addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will practice throughout the week and I will meet with small groups to identify their complications individually. Please continue to have them practice at home. Their DREAM homework sheet is also a continuation of this practice. It will be collected on Friday. We are working on Math 4 Today Week 4, with an assessment on Friday. Helpful videos: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/addition-subtraction/add-with-regroup.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/addition-subtraction/sub-with-regroup.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/addition-subtraction/add-sub-wo-regrp.htm I am sending home Dojo reports with their graded test papers today. Please sign these and return them tomorrow. For those of you that are unaware, we record grades in a system called PowerSchool. There is a parent app available so that you can check their grades, attendance, and even be notified when their lunch account becomes negative. If you do not know your child’s login information (it should be your email address), please respond and I will get the information to you as soon as possible. http://www.pearsonschoolsystems.com/products/mobile/parents/ Please be reminded that third grade grandparents breakfast is tomorrow at 7:15am in the cafeteria. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Thanks!
We had a blast today in Science! Yesterday and today we talked about the importance of having clear and specific procedures during scientific investigations. We did activities today in class to experience WHY that is important. Unclear, incorrect, or non-specific procedures affect the outcome of the experiement, and they can also cause a lab to become unsafe. We hope you enjoy our electrifying video of our learning experience today! Have a great weekend! Today in Science, we learned about INFERENCES. This is a difficult concept for 3rd graders because it is hard for them to decipher between observations, inferences, and predictions.
We discussed that OBSERVATIONS are facts that we collect using our 5 senses or by measuring. PREDICTIONS are our thoughts about what might happen in the future. An INFERENCE is what we think according to our observations, and prior knowledge. I shared the following video with students in class, and I wanted to share it so that they can watch it again at home. Students automatically make the mistake of saying “It’s a candle” as their observation, when actually “It’s a candle” would be an inference. http://youtu.be/tPhWF2zPSwk We will also use this link tomorrow: http://www.slideshare.net/cjunsay/obs-inf-pred-2 to test our knowledge. Having your students practice this at home with everyday situations would be extremely helpful to them. On your way to school, have them make an observation about what they see…infer what they think…and predict what will happen next. I am also including an example: From the picture below, I can OBSERVE that there is a boy in the water. I can INFER that he fell off of the branch into the water. I can PREDICT that when he gets out, the goat will chase him. Good morning! If you have pertinent messages for me today, please do not leave them on my school voicemail, as I am not at school today and will not be able to retrieve them. My youngest daughter, Sadie, fell yesterday evening and broke both
bones in her arm, so I am home with her today. The children are in excellent hands with Mrs. Dotson today! She is absolutely wonderful! Our I can statements for the week are: Science - I can use tools , infer data , and explain results for a scientific investigation. Math - I can use many different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems within 1000. These will be posted in their agenda for this week, found on page 25. I have attached the DREAM homework sheet in the event you need a replacement. Please remember that these are collected every Friday. Our school-wide policy, as noted in the student handbook, is "No homework; No recess." The homework on this week's DREAM sheet is a continuation of what we are doing in class - addition and subtraction within 1000. Scholastic Study Jams has some excellent videos/tutorials that will be a good review for them at home: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/addition-subtraction/add-with-regroup.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/addition-subtraction/sub-with-regroup.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/addition-subtraction/add-sub-wo-regrp.htm We are working on Math 4 Today Week 3, and will have an assessment on Friday. In science, we are continuing with our study of conducting scientific investigations. This week we will focus on different tools used in science and also recording data, then comparing results. We will watch the following videos in class: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/scientific-inquiry/scientific-methods.htm http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/scienceskills/tallychartsandbargraphs/ Please feel free to let your student watch them again from home for review. Students will have their Dojo reports stapled to the third grade newsletter (also attached), several important flyers from the office, and graded test papers. Please be sure to sign the Dojo report and return it to school tomorrow. You may keep the test papers and flyers for your files. You can email me or call with any questions or concerns that you may have. |
