Greetings! I have attached third grade newsletter and this week’s homework sheet. Dojo reports and graded test papers will be sent home today. Please sign them and return by tomorrow. In Science, we are discussing plant adaptations. We will use the following videos in class: Plant Adaptation and Study Jams. Students will discuss the adaptations of different plant parts and we will also discuss certain plant adaptations for different habitats. We will explore leaf thickness and how it is an adaptation of their ability to retain water. We will also complete an activity to determine how leaf shape, size, and texture are adaptations for light and water. We will use the following website when we sort plants into their habitats by their adaptations: http://www.mbgnet.net/bioplants/adapt.html. In Math, we will be working at different Christmas themed math stations. Students will practice place value with presents, Exercise estimation skills with the elves, Score big in a sweet subtraction shuffle, Use money skills in a sleepy Santa shopping spree, Match facts in merry multiplication, and write their own winter word problems We are also working on Math 4 Today Week 17. We will complete the study guide together in class on Wednesday, test on Friday. Our school Christmas program will be this Friday at 9am in the Activity Center. It is always a wonderful production – we would love for each of you to attend. Please remember that we will have our Polar Express part on Friday at 1:00. I have attached the flyer that was sent home last week. Please let me know if you have any questions.
We have been working hard learning about the properties of multiplication and applying them. We completed another Scoot assessment today identifying the properties. I noticed students were referencing the anchor charts I have in the room, so I thought I would share them in attempt to aid in this week’s homework. Please let me know if you have any questions!
As you know, our class attended the Watershed Ecology session today. Today’s lesson was titled “Marsh Munchers”. Students learned about the brackish water of the marsh by mixing the freshwater with the salt water of the ocean. They also learned about food chains and food webs. We learned new vocabulary terms such as: herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, producers, first consumers, apex consumers, and decomposers. Students then constructed their own marsh food chains. And learned an awesome food chain chant! Ben was the student leader for my homeroom, and Julie led for Ms. Mitchell’s homeroom. They both did a great job! Although we have not learned about food chains yet, this was a great introduction. We will complete our food chain unit in January after we learn about habitats. There is an awesome website link on the student page of my website (http://3-burnette.weebly.com/student-sites.html) called “The Food Chain Game” that is a great review of the things we discussed today. There is also a great Brain Pop, Jr. video that goes along with it (http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/foodchain/).
Good afternoon! I have attached the DREAM homework sheet and Third grade newsletter for this week. Graded test papers and Dojo Reports will also be sent home today. Please remember to sign these and return them tomorrow. In Math, we will continue focusing on the properties of multiplication. This week we will engage in activities exploring the commutative, associative, and distributive properties. We will have a quiz on Friday to assess their knowledge of the 5 properties (we discussed identity and zero properties last week). We are working on Math 4 Today Week #16. We will complete the study guide together in class on Thursday. I have attached it in the event you would like to use it as a practice test. For Science, students worked extremely hard last week as they learned about the life cycles of different animals and presented them to their classmates. I am currently working on compiling a video of their presentations that I will email out once it publishes. We will have our summative assessment on Life Cycles tomorrow. We are completing the study guide together in class today. I decided to make a “Key” for the Science study guide to ensure that all students have the correct answer on their papers and also to assist parents with studying at home. (attached) Although on the study guide, they only have to name and order the life cycles of the bean plant, frog, and butterfly – they will be required to illustrate and label the life cycle on the test. (actually draw a picture) I also ran across a really helpful website that has links to life cycle illustrations from animals in each “category”. (Near the bottom of the page) http://www.kidzone.ws/animals/lifecycle.htm On Wednesday, we will attend the Watershed Ecology Program. Please be sure that you have sent $1 for your child to attend. Afterwards, we will begin discussing plant and animal adaptations. This is one of my favorite units and we have many exciting inquiry based activities planned. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!
I also failed to remind you all that students have their Thanksgiving packets that have been offered as Extra Credit. I originally said these should be returned by Wednesday, however, I am extending the deadline to Friday, December 5th. I have attached the packet in the event you need replacement pages.
Good morning! Attached you will find the DREAM homework sheet for the week, the Third Grade Newsletter, and the Math 4 Today Study Sheet. The only homework for the week will be the DREAM sheet. No multiplication log, and the study sheet will be completed in class. Dojo reports and graded test papers will be sent home today. Please sign these and return them by tomorrow. In Science this week, we will continue our study of life cycles moving on towards animal life cycles. Students are required to know the steps in life cycles of mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, birds, and insects. We will complete several activities, allowing students to collect information and then illustrate the life cycle of butterflies, frogs, sea turtles, and salmon. I am providing these links in the event your child wants to view them from home as review. Butterflies Frogs Sea Turtle – YouTube Salmon – YouTube Insects In Math, we will continue practicing multiplication. We will focus this week on the properties of multiplication. Students are required to know the following properties: commutative, distributive, associative, identity, and property of zero. We will complete an organizer to illustrate understanding, also assigning each property with a nickname and visual icon. We are working on Math 4 Today #15. The assessment will be on Friday as usual. We will also begin taking our Kiwanis test towards medal achievement. Any student that scores 100% in 11 minutes will have their name added to the Kiwanis Medalist board and will receive a medal at the end of the year. I have attached the test so that you can practice at home if you wish. We have another Watershed event coming up on December 9th and 10th. This is a program through USC Upstate that brings hands on science lessons to our school. Cost is $1 per child to attend. Please send $1 by this Friday. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. I am looking forward to a great week!
