Hello! The homework assignments for the week can be viewed on the agenda page below. Please remember that if you need additional copies of the homework sheets, you can click on the agenda photo below to download them. Tomorrow, students from math homerooms will complete a Mock Writing test with Ms. Mitchell. We will not switch on regular schedule, as they will spend the day with her. Students from Ms. Mitchell's homeroom will complete a math mock test with me and also practice 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication. In math this week, we are continuing area and also adding in perimeter. Students are completing Math 4 Today #29. We will complete the study guide on Wednesday and our test will be on Friday. We will also have another Turner Timed Test on Friday. In Science, we are working on our new chapter on Ecosystems. Students will work in groups to complete the Lesson check together using their textbooks. On Thursday, students will participate in South Carolina History Day. They will rotate between different classes learning all about our wonderful state of South Carolina! This is one of my favorite days of the school year! This year's classes will include: SC Native Americans, The State Dance - Shag, The State Dog - Boykin Spaniel, SC Agriculture, The Revolutionary War in SC, and Textiles in SC. I will be sure to take plenty of pictures and share them so you can see their excitement in the learning process! Graded papers and Dojo reports are being sent home today with the 3rd grade newsletter. Please be sure to sign them and return them tomorrow. Let me know if you have any additional questions or comments! Thanks so much! I have also introduced a new concept in our classroom for rewarding (and modeling) excellent behavior. Students will be selected to have "VIP Seating" if they are doing an excellent job meeting expectations in the classroom. Students also have the opportunity to visit the treat basket as a reward. Our treat baskets now includes passes for the following: The students seemed VERY excited about these new rewards when I introduced them on Friday.
Please feel free to review my current projects on Donors Choose that will improve our VIP Seating area: It's crazy for me to think that I am almost 36 years old and I am still learning things about myself. I am currently enrolled at Walden University, working towards a Doctor of Education degree, specializing in Educational Technology. This semester, I am enrolled in 2 courses, which has been extremely overwhelming on top of my teaching position, being a wife and mom, and all of the other obligations and responsibilities I have. Week before last, I had a melt down - I was overwhelmed with deadlines, but in hindsight, I realize it was actually much more that was overwhelming me. In my 36 years, I would have NEVER considered myself to be a perfectionist. Just come look at the dirt and dust covered floors of my home, or my unorganized desk drawers at work. I am far from perfect and would never claim to be. It wasn't until recently that I realized that I hold unhealthy, unrealistic, perfectionist expectations for my school work. Throughout my coursework for my Master's, I held a 4.0 and rarely scored less than 100% on any of my weekly work. The same can be said for the first few course of my doctoral coursework. I am currently in week 4 of my classes now, and during week 2 I received my grades for my week 1 discussion posts -- 26/30...a "B"! I was infuriated! I could not entertain the idea of having a "B" average for a class. So I spent hours studying over the rubrics and requirements for the current week before submitting my work....adamant that I would score better in my week 2 posts. Week 3 rolls around and I finally receive grades and feedback for all of my hard work in week 2......................I opened my grade portal and tears flooded my eyes....25/30. Worse than the week before! I literally could not control the anger I felt inside and it manifested as a flood of tears and utter meltdown. I immediately emailed the professor and explained my disappointment and demanded further explanation of expectations and his reasoning for my grade.
He will never believe I am saying this, but HE'S RIGHT. It's not about being perfect. It's about giving my all......putting forth effort to do my best in every single assignment. If I bring that effort, I accept the constructive criticisms given in my feedback, and I continually meet the requirements implied -- change will occur. I am improving my skills, and ultimately myself as a whole.
Getting 100s on everything the first go around isn't teaching me anything, nor is it challenging me to make improvements. I must strive for PROGRESS...not PERFECTION. I just received my score today for my work last week. I was SO excited to receive a 28.5/30! Knowing that I have made progress was such a satisfying feeling. Knowing that the professor acknowledged my progress was even better! I can honestly say that I am more proud of this 28.5 than I have ever been with my "perfect scores".....simply because I can say I've made progress and I have grown. ...and I don't HAVE to be perfect to do so! What a wonderful lesson I have learned! Hello! Below is information regarding this week of instruction: The agenda photo above shows homework for both my class and Ms. Mitchell's. As always, you can click on the photo to download an additional copy of the homework sheets. Students in Ms. Mitchell's homeroom were Mock testing (writing) with her all day, so we did not switch classes as usual. Students copied all homework in their agenda during homeroom for both classes.
In Science, we are beginning a new chapter about ecosystems. I am returning the Chapter 4 science tests with graded papers today. We will introduce our new chapter throughout the week and also begin reading lesson 1 - "what are ecosystems": There is no graded work for science this week. In Math, we are working on Math 4 Today Week #28. We will complete the study guide on Thursday and our test will be on Friday. We are also working on finding the area of polygons. Brain Pop, Jr. has a great video to go along with this concept: https://jr.brainpop.com/math/measurement/area/ Please remember that tomorrow we have Awards Day beginning at 8:15 in the cafeteria. Limo to Lunch is Thursday and Thunderbash is Friday for those that participated in our last fundraiser. Students with fewer than 3 homework strikes for the 3rd 9 weeks will also receive an ice cream at lunch on Friday as part of our homework celebration. 3rd grade newsletter, dojo reports, and graded papers are being sent home today -- please sign them and return them tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any further questions or comments. Hello! Below you will find a copy of the agenda page for the week. Please notices the changes due to our Teacher Workday on Friday. All homework will be collected on Thursday and we will have our Math 4 Today Test and Science Chapter 4 Test on Thursday as well. We will be reviewing for our Science test all week using the resources I shared with you in a previous post: http://3-burnette.weebly.com/burnettes-blog/chapter-4-science-test Please be sure to refer back to that when preparing. Students have their hard copy of the study guide as well. It would also be extremely beneficial for students to read the passage about Robotic Fish on pg. 174 of their science textbook (you can access this with the Pearson Realize link provided in the Chapter 4 Science Test post as well). Students will be required to read this passage as part of the test and there will be several comprehension questions In Math, we are continuing our study on creating and interpreting line plots. This week, we will practicing measuring to the nearest 1/4 inch in order to generate data for our line plots. We are working on Math 4 Today Week #27. We will complete the study guide on Wednesday and our test will be on Thursday.
Our Chapter 4 Science Test will be next Thursday, March 16. We are completing the study guide and chapter review questions together this week so that students have ample time to study and prepare for the test. Please remember that I have assigned the Chapter through our textbook website (www.pearsonrealize.com) if you wish to use that as review. Everyone's login information is the same as their Study Island login (located in front of agenda) with exception of Kylie, Bailey, Joshua, Adrian, Jordan, and Matthew. (Those students have one extra digit added to the end.) If you are from my homeroom, your password is Science3b and if you are from Mitchell's homeroom, the password is Science3m. Another option for studying is using our Quizizz review game. The information for logging in and joining the game can be found below.
We will go over the chapter review questions from their textbook and complete the study guide tomorrow in class. I am providing an answer key so that you can use them for review at home if you wish. (You can click on these images to download the pdf of the files)
Please let me know if you have any additional questions or if you have problems accessing any of the resources I have shared.
Hello! Homework assignments for the week can be found on the agenda photo below. Additional copies of the homework sheets can be downloaded by clicking on the photo. In Science, we are wrapping up Chapter 4. We will complete our study guide together this week, however, our test will not be until next week. We will complete review week and do several review activities throughout the week to help them prepare for next week's test. I assigned everyone each lesson and review questions through www.pearsonrealize.com, the online version of our textbook. This would be an excellent at-home review. If you need your child's login information, please feel free to contact me! In math, we are working on another type of graph this week. Our focus will be on line plots. This is a great step-by-step tutorial on Study Jams: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/data-analysis/line-plots.htm We are also still working on multiplication facts. Quick Check homework, classwork practice, and quizzes will begin being reflective of this, as we have replaced one problem from each day with a multiplication problem. Right now these problems will be multiplies of ten, for example one of the problems on today's was 800 x 4. Since students know 8 x 4 = 32, they can move the two zeros from 800 to their answer. After a few weeks of this practice, we will begin multiplying 2 or 3-digit numbers by a single digit number -- like 354 x 3. It is SUPER important that students have mastered their basic facts so that they are able to move to this next level of multiplication. We are working on Math 4 Today Week #26 this week. We will complete the study guide together in class on Thursday and our test will be on Friday. We will also be working on a Core Bites study guide and have a quiz on Friday. Graded papers, Dojo reports, and 3rd grade newsletters are being sent home today. Please be sure to sign these and return them tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any further questions. I hope you all have a wonderful week!
