We had meet the teacher tonight for rising third graders. It's so bittersweet...I love meeting my new class but it makes me realize the end is near for this school year. I'm going to miss this group so much!!! Good morning! Attached, you will find the third grade newsletter and DREAM homework sheet for the week . I am extremely excited about our plans for the week! We will be fully integrating Math and Science as we completely a week long unit on Dolphins – specifically the story behind Winter. I have attached the introduction to the book Winter’s Tale, which we read today before we took a virtual field trip to Clearwater, Florida. (www.scholastic.com/winterstail) The students were fully captivated as they learned about Winter and explored the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Tomorrow, we will learn more facts about dolphins and make observations as we view Winter and Hope (a rescued sea turtle) on a live webcam at the aquarium. We will be reading several non-fiction articles about dolphins, learning about their sonar (echo-location), and their different parts that have helped them adapt to their environment. http://www.highlightskids.com/audio-story/noisy-world-dolphins http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/animal-planet-presents/videos/the-ultimate-guide-to-dolphins-secrets-of-dolphin-sonar.htm http://kids.nceas.ucsb.edu/mmp/bottlenose.html As we integrate all of this into math, we will do several “labs” where we have to measure a dolphin replica, assemble the pieces of her prosthetic tale and take measurements, and also track progress of when she attempted to use her tail on a bar graph. We even have a simulated experienced planned where students will explore writing with their non-dominate hand and tracking their attempts/mistakes. On Friday, we will watch clips from the movie Dolphin Tale and discuss the differences between the movie and the facts that we have learned about in class through our experiences and research. This week will be packed full of learning and fun learning experiences! Dojo reports will be sent home today. Please sign and return them by tomorrow. ***There is also a slip concerning Fun Day (June 2nd). Students need to send $3 for admission.*** If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me! Thanks!
Good morning! Attached you will find the DREAM homework sheet and Third grade newsletter. We will no longer be completely Multiplication Study Logs. J This week’s homework will go along with our Science unit. Students will review the weather forecast each night and record it on their DREAM sheet. (www.weather.com) In Science, we are working on a unit that goes along with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. We will study different weather phenomenon and different cloud types. (These are actually 4th grade standards!) Today we read the book and the students did a writing activity, where they became the author. The prompt was “I don’t want it to rain meatballs, but I wish it would rain __________, because…” They were also allowed to illustrate their writing. They turned out so cute! Tomorrow, we will focus on cloud types. This is an excellent tutorial on the different types of clouds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMagDRCpJ14. We will also read about them in the attached article. On Wednesday, we will review some things Ms. Mitchell has taught them about figurative language by completing a fun activity on weather related idioms. Thursday and Friday, we will complete a weather scavenger hunt and watch clips from the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. In math, we will review through several math topics that go along with our weather unit. We will practice reading thermometers, complete a favorite weather survey and make bar graphs, and solve weather word problems. We will have our Math 4 Today #30 test tomorrow! (So that I can get them graded and recorded before grades are due). We are reviewing and correcting their folder work in class today! I have noticed that a large number of students are still having difficulty with time and elapsed time. I have chosen these two areas for our Study Island Log this week. I am anxious to see their scores on the logs. Hopefully this extra review will benefit them and help them master these skills. Please continue to practice with them at home and give them “real world” experiences and application. Dojo reports and graded test papers will be sent home today. Please sign them and return them by tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Good morning! Please remember that we begin PASS Testing tomorrow. I am including some important reminders for you and your child below. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the PASS Test and I will help as I can.
I have attached several documents that will be helpful if you wish to review with your child at home. The Science and Math Parent Guides list our standards specifically, and give suggestions of how you can practice them at home. I have attached the answer key to the Science Review questions that we will be completing in class today. I have also attached some Study Island questions that will review all of the Math standards. The key is located at the end of the document. Please assist me in stressing the importance of PASS Testing to your child, however, please avoid making them overly anxious or apprehensive. I am confident that they are capable and prepared. I ran across a quote online that I will share with them tomorrow morning. “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.” –Arthur Ashe We will not have homework this week, so there is no DREAM sheet nor Multiplication Log attached. I have, however, attached the 3rd Grade Newsletter. The PASS schedule is listed on the newsletter that will tell you which subject is tested each day. Dojo Reports and graded test papers will also be sent home today. Please sign them and return them tomorrow. Once again, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a blessed day!
