After we completed our study guide, we went ahead and watched the read-aloud "What if you had animal feet". Tomorrow when we finish our adaptation test, students will complete their research activity for animal feet. I have also created an answer key for the study guide. We went over this together in class today. A signed study guide is worth 5 bonus points!

Good morning! I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter! In Science, we are finishing up on our Adaptations unit. We will complete a study guide on Tuesday and have the assessment on Wednesday. I have attached the study guide in the event you would like to study with your child at home. It may also be helpful to review some of the videos and the PASS Coach we have used in class. https://jr.brainpop.com/science/plants/plantadaptations/ https://jr.brainpop.com/science/animals/migration/ https://jr.brainpop.com/science/animals/hibernation/ https://jr.brainpop.com/science/animals/camouflage/ http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/plants/plant-adaptations.htm
I am including the invitation for our Blue Ribbon Ceremony on Friday. We would love for you to attend. We have many exciting events planned throughout the day for the students. Everyone should wear blue to help us celebrate!
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns! I hope everyone has a great week and we make it through the Spring Break Countdown!
Today Ms. Beech shared "What if you had animal hair". The kids were so excited about her surprise ending and they cannot wait for tomorrow's story time! Here's a sample of their work today... We used KidRex and the following links to brainstorm ideas of different animals to research:
http://www.boredpanda.com/furry-hairy-animals/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2121659/Into-wild-Hilarious-animal-photos-just-humans-bad-hair-days.html Today's read-aloud is "What if I had Animal Ears" I am not at school today, but students are completing this activity with the substitute. I can't wait to see what animals they choose and the awesome facts they will share from their research! I wanted to be sure they had access to the video over the weekend if they wanted to listen to it again! A message to students:I love you all and I miss you dearly! I hope you are exhibiting your best behavior for Mrs. Casey while I am out. We are on a weekend trip to Indiana. I will try to post pictures along our way. {be sure to check back over the weekend} I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I will see you kiddos on Monday! Be sweet!
Love, Mrs. Burnette We are starting animal adaptations today and I am beyond excited! Ms. Beech is helping us out with read-alouds of the awesome books I shared on Monday. Today, Ms. Beech shared "What if You had Animal Teeth?" I have included the video of the read-aloud below so that students can watch it again from home. Students are now selecting a different animal to research using KidRex and they are using Sandra Markle's book as a mentor text to create their own pages of the book. I cannot get over how engrossed they are with this activity. They are so excited to learn about different animal teeth and how they help those animals survive. Some finished up early -- I think they look great! PS - THEY ARE FINISHED...check them all out!{Burnette's Homeroom} {Mitchell's Homeroom}
Hello, everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! This morning, we had our "make-up" Watershed from when Mr. Limbke was ill. It was entitled "Marsh Munchers" and we learned about food chains, producers, consumers, decomposers, etc. The students loved it! I caught a quick video clip of them doing their food chain chant. Check it out! This week in Science, we will begin animal adaptations. We have several fun activities planned with the read-alouds below. Ms. Beech, the media specialist, will be helping us out on this! In Math, we plan to revisit multiplication and word problems. We have been completing the "Turner Timed Test" each month and unfortunately, we only have a few that have made 100. We found a unit plan that promotes multiplication success in 7 days with a plan of teaching the facts in chunks. With that being said, our homework will be a little different this week. We have included the DREAM pennant at the top, so that you can recognize it as their homework sheet. Over the next seven days, we will be revisiting the multiplication facts. We will be using a system called Seven Days to Multiplication Mastery. Each day I will send you some problems that I want you to help your child master. Have your child drill these facts and these facts only so that your child will master these by the next day. How you choose to do this is really up to you. The homework sheets for this week and next week are attached below. There is no written homework required to be turned in for this!
On Friday, students always take advantage of their reward coupons. They also get to use the iPads for eReading if they finish their tests early. Hope you enjoy the pictures below of a few of them using their coupons and also checking out the First Book / Open Ebook app. They were amazed that they could download some of the latest and most popular titles...all for free! (Don't forget you can use this from home as well!) Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns! Have a great week!
Watch the YouTube video about Plant Adaptations.
When you finish watching the video and reading the article, comment below with one interesting fact that you learned then complete the "Amazing Adaptations" cause and effect sheet for a classwork grade.
“It’s never too late to set a new goal or dream a new dream.”
-Author unknown Today, we talked about how we only have one nine weeks block left for third grade. We discussed how it’s never too late to set a new goal for ourselves. Early finishers added their goals to our Graffiti board and we’ve posted it in the room as a constant reminder of what we are working towards. Hello! Attached you will find the DREAM Worksheet and 3rd Grade Newsletter.
This week in Science, we will have our test on Life Cycles. We will complete the study guide together tomorrow and then test on Wednesday. Afterwards, we will begin discussing plant adaptations and do an exciting investigation to test how leaf shapes plays a role with rain water.
In Math we are going back to review a few concepts we feel we need to spend a little more time on. This week, we will work on expanded form and the properties of multiplication. We will use this song to help us remember the properties... My dad came and picked up the chicks for me this morning, as our classroom was beginning to smell more like a barnyard. I can honestly say that the experience and seeing the kids faces as we learned about life cycles was worth any fowl odor. They were sad to see them leave, but I know they will remember this experience for many years! • The Spring Basket Sale starts today. This packet is stapled in with graded papers and Dojo Reports (please sign those and return tomorrow)
• Report Cards will be given out on Wednesday. (Please make sure all lunch balances are paid in full.) • Thunderbash is Friday for those who sold at least 1 item for the PTO fundraiser. • Spirit Day and the Homework Celebration is this Friday. Please have you child wear his/her school t-shirt. As part of Spirit Day, we are collecting gently used clothing for the Woodruff Community Clothes Closet. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. I hope you all have a great week!
We have 8 chicks under the heat lamp and 3 still drying in the incubator. Excited does not even begin to explain the atmosphere around here!
Students gave their presentations this morning and did another fabulous job. Please watch the Animoto video with pictures and video clips below...
It's been a Fabulous Friday and I hope everyone has a Wonderful Weekend!
We had our tornado drill this morning for Severe Weather Awareness Week. The kids did great and are prepared and knowledgeable should our area experience any severe weather. On a lighter note, my FAVORITE part about coming in every morning is feeding Val. She knows our schedule and is already out and waiting for her breakfast right at 7. She wastes no time! This morning, I ran the computer lab, so it was 7:45 before I got to the room. Bennett helped me record some footage of her eating so that we should share it with everyone. We LOVE watching her tail twitch before she pounces!
Stay tuned for more pictures!
Students are detectives uncovering all of the facts about life cycles for their perspective animals. This week's groups are the elephant, the clownfish, the guppy, the sea turtle, the penguin, and the frog. I can't wait to see their new Glogster presentations! They all cheered when I told them they would get to do another Glogster!
Have a wonderful Wednesday! Ms. Mitchell's homeroom just wouldn't have it any other way than to have their own video on the blog. They were confident they could outdo my homeroom. This was a TOUGH battle of the bands! What do you think?!? Hello, everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. If you have not already checked out our presentations from Friday, please be sure to visit that post (http://3-burnette.weebly.com/burnettes-blog/presentations) and find your child's group. This week in Science, we have decided to continue researching life cycles. This week, groups will be divided and we will have one research an animal from mammals, one from birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish with live birth, and fish that lay eggs. Students will present their research to the class on Friday. In math, we are working on angles and 3D nets. Today we learned a new song about the types of angles. They were so excited to perform it for you all! Students will learn about nets of solids this week. They should be able to view a net and determine which solid shape it can make. There is a great website for understanding this better: http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/geometry-nets.html Dream Sheet, M4T #26 Study Guide, and Newsletter are attached below. Dojo reports and graded papers are also being sent home today. Please sign them and return tomorrow. Let me know if you have any other questions!!!
Updates:
*Our tadpole now has front legs. *We removed the egg turner, as our eggs should hatch by Thursday!!! *Our lima beans have not sprouted anymore :( *Val is doing great! Students finished up their insect life cycle research Friday and presented their Glogsters to the class. They did an AMAZING job. Mrs. Beech (media specialist) and Mrs. Burke (reading coach) came to visit and were really impressed! Please check out their Glogster (digital poster) and then watch their presentation as well. Even though we had a few technical difficulties, it went great, and students learned so much!, Burnette's HomeroomMitchell's Homeroom
As we begin our study of animal life cycles, I introduced students to the life cycle of insects. We talked about the fact that some insects go through complete metamorphosis (4 stages: egg, larva, pupa, adult), while others go through incomplete metamorphosis (3 stages: egg, nymph, adult). Students were then given a large manila envelop that I called "case files" and I explained that they were going to become detectives and uncover more information about different insects and their life cycles.
They blew me away! ...their ability to work together and collaborate with one focus ...their inquisitive minds ...their engagement in the activity ...their contributions to our class discussion, ..their capacity to use technology to conduct research ...and the way they were able to evaluate the information they encountered as relevant or not. I was just so impressed with their performance during this activity. We will continue researching tomorrow and will then begin working on presentations. Students will use either Haiku Deck or Glogster to share their reports with their peers. I can't wait to share them with you! Please enjoy the Animoto video of pictures I snapped while they were working. |
My dream is to create a 21st Century classroom that encourages collaboration, integrates technology, and promotes thinking deeply.
