Performance AssessmentGood morning! I have been so excited to share with you all about our Performance Assessment from Friday. This form of assessment was the most accurate and authentic picture of their knowledge that I would have never attained through a paper and pencil or computerized test.
Each task was worth 3 points for a total of 30 possible points. Students did such a great job with this activity and their knowledge about circuits really blew me away! I hope you enjoy some pictures I snapped during the assessments. Homework for the week can be found on the agenda page below. Please remember that you can click on the agenda photo to download an additional copy of the homework sheets if you need replacements. Dojo reports, graded test papers, and 3rd grade newsletters will be sent home today. Please be sure to sign the Dojo report and return them tomorrow.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns! Happy Halloween!
Hello, everyone! I hope everyone had a great weekend. This week's homework can be found below. You can click on the agenda photo to download an additional copy of the homework sheets. In math this week, we are continuing to focus on fractions. We will work on parts (c) and (d) of the 3.NSF.1 (pg. 26) standard, which focuses on fractions on a number line and fractions of a set and area. We will also working on Math 4 Today #10. We will review the study guide together in class on Thursday and our test will be on Friday, as usual. In Science, we fell a little behind, so we are still working on Chapter 2 Lesson 2, which discusses how electric charges flow in a circuit. We will work in groups on Thursday to complete the Lesson 2 Check up.
Last week, we did an activity with the circuits to develop an understanding of how switches work. Students worked to identify open circuits and closed circuits.
Please remember that this week is Red Ribbon Week. Activities for the week can be found below, along with this week's 3rd grade newsletter. I would also like to congratulate my homeroom for having the most number of blue ribbons in the Math Study Island lab. Each student received a homework pass and we have a certificate on display inside our classroom. I am so proud of their hard work and effort in the computer lab! Lily Willis was also recognized for having the highest total for our class. Way to go, Lily!
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns throughout the week. I would be happy to speak with you! Hello, everyone! Below, you will find information regarding this week in Math and Science. Please remember that this is Parent-Teacher Conference week and there is no school for students on Friday. Unlike WPS, we are not required to hold a conference for every child. If I am requiring a conference for your child, I have sent home a request last week and again this week. Please be sure to respond! If you did not receive a request from me, I do not find it necessary to schedule a conference. Since this is a short week, homework and testing schedule are a little different. Please pay close attention to the agenda schedule for due dates and test prep. Please remember that you can click on the agenda photo to download an additional copy of the homework pages. In Math this week, we are introducing and developing an understanding of fractions. There are several great videos on Brain Pop, Jr. that your child can watch to review. https://jr.brainpop.com/math/fractions/ We are also working on Math 4 Today #9. We will go over the study guide in class on Wednesday and our test will be on Thursday this week. Please continue to review addition and subtraction with and without borrowing so that your child continues to do well on the Operation Quick Check quizzes. Additional practice can be created and downloaded at the following site: http://www.math-aids.com/Mixed_Problems/Mixed_Problems_Worksheets_MV.html In science, we are continuing through Chapter 2 Lesson 1 where we explore how electricity is transferred in a circuit. I found a great video on YouTube that helps explain how a circuit works to light a bulb. Students had a great time exploring this last week in our inquiry lab. Last week, students were given materials to explore creating a circuit to light a light bulb. Before beginning the activity, we discussed the meaning of INQUIRY and also PERSISTENCE. They were given 10 minutes to work with their table to see if they could complete a circuit. As with true inquiry, none of the groups were able to create the circuit on their own. As I walked around, I got tickled at the conversation of one of the groups. Greta exclaimed to her group, "This is IMPOSSIBLE!" Another of her group members, Abigail, said, "Come on, Greta...think POSITIVE!" Greta then argued back, "I'm POSITIVE this is IMPOSSIBLE!" Once I showed them the requirements for completing a circuit and that it COULD be done, they were bursting with excitement to try it. All of their faces lit up as the bulbs did! Students then created an open circuit where they inserted 5 different objects (paperclip, notecard, penny, plastic spoon, and tinfoil) to test their conductivity. Please enjoy the picture below from their inquiry lab. This was definitely a memorable learning experience for all of them! Dojo reports, third grade newsletters, and graded papers are being sent home today. Please sign them and return them tomorrow. Math papers are missing from their stack, as I was out of town from Thursday - Sunday. Tests from Friday will be held until the new nine weeks and their report card grades are not reflective of these scores. (Report Cards are issued Wednesday). Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns! Have a great week!
Hello! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! This week's homework can be found below. You can click on the agenda picture to download an additional copy of the homework for the week. Dojo reports, graded test papers, and 3rd grade newsletter will also be sent home today. Please sign them and return them tomorrow. You will notice on the homework that we will have a Core Bites test tomorrow. These tests run every 15 lessons (we complete one in class each day). We typically do not give study guides for Core Bites since the questions are pulled straight from that set of Core Bites (#16-30), but we decided to give one this time. We completed Core Bites Study Guides in class today. If you review the study guide with your child, please be sure to sign it for 5 extra bonus points!
In Math this week, we are working on numeric forms (expanded, standard, and word) and comparing numbers. Students are very familiar with this since it shows up on Core Bites and Math 4 Today a good bit, but we want to ensure mastery before we skip past the standards. This week we are working on Math 4 Today #8 with our test on Friday. I will not be at school on Thursday or Friday, as I will be away at a residency in Atlanta for my doctorate program. With this being said, we will go over Math 4 Today study guides on Wednesday so that they get the instruction from me and not the substitute. In Science, we are beginning our new unit on Magnetism and Electricity. We will do some inquiry activities involving circuits and electric conductors and also begin reading Chapter 2 Lesson 1 and answering the corresponding questions. We will also introduce all of the vocabulary for the chapter using Quizlet. On Thursday, students that sold at least 1 item in our fundraiser will attend Thunderbash. Also, qualifying students will attend Limo to Lunch on Friday. WPS character parade is also this Friday. Our class will go out on the bus circle and watch the parade so that they can see any family members that are participating. Please be sure to send your child to school with a jacket in the event it is cool. As mentioned above, I will not be at school on Thursday or Friday. Please do not send any time pertinent information to my email or voicemail. I will be checking email if you have any questions or concerns -- I am just not sure how often I will be free from sessions. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns regarding this week. Thank you for your continued support. As I was preparing for the study session for this afternoon, I realized I misunderstood the capabilities of the students participating in Kahoot! from home. They would actually need two devices in order to do that (one for answering and one for displaying the questions/answers), which isn't very feasible.
I found another site that will allow game mode that works virtually the same as Kahoot!, however, it allows the answer choices to be displayed with the questions simultaneously. It will actually work better because you will be able to participate at the time of your choosing, rather than having to be online at a certain time. In order to participate in the student session, please follow the following steps: 1. Open http://join.quizizz.com in your browser 2. Enter the 6-digit game code 615900 and click "Proceed" 3. Now enter your name and click "Join Game!" 4. You will get an avatar, and then see a "Start Game" button. Click it to begin! All results will be saved through the website and emailed to me. Please let me know if you have any trouble accessing the study session. I hope this helps them prepare for our test tomorrow! Also remember that you can sign their study guide and receive 5 bonus points on the test!
Good morning! Below you will find this week's homework and third grade newsletter. You can download an additional copy of the homework sheets by clicking on the agenda photo. Newsletters, graded papers, and Dojo Reports will be in their Mail folder today. Please remember to sign these and return them tomorrow.
Our end of year testing, SC Ready, will be 100% online testing this year. In order to better prepare for this transition, we will administer our first Chapter 1 Science test as an online test through Pearson Realize. Since I have enough iPads for a 1:1 student:technology ratio, we will test in our classroom on the iPads. (Other 3rd grade classes will use the laptop mobile lab and visit the BMW computer labs.) I will print and share their results with you, just as we do with other written tests. They will be sent home via their Monday Mail next week. Upon completion of this assessment, we will begin introducing our next Chapter on Electricity and Magnetism
In Math this week, we will be working on Math 4 Today #7 with an assessment on Friday. We will complete and review study guides on Thursday in class. Remember if you sign your child's study guide verifying you have studied with them, they earn an additional 5 points on their test! Today in class, we are working on checking our work with the opposite operation. For example, if I complete the problem 862 - 489 = 373, I can check my work by adding my answer to the number I subtracted and if my sum matches the top number of my subtraction problem, I know I am correct -- 373 + 489 = 862. Students will be able to earn bonus point on their Quick Check Quizzes if they show where they have checked their work! We will also introduce the skill of multiplying by multiples of 10 this week. Since we haven't covered basic multiplication facts yet, they will learn how to use a 100s multiplication chart to find the answer of the basic fact. Please let me know if you have any further questions regarding this week. I know this was a good bit of information, but I wanted to be sure you all were aware of everything going on and the resources available. I hope everyone has a great week! |
