Good morning! Only three documents attached for the week. There is no DREAM sheet, multiplication log, nor Math 4 Today Study sheet since we have a short week. Graded test papers and Dojo reports will be sent home today. Please sign and return these tomorrow. In Science we will finish our plant life cycle unit. Students will collect information from their PASS Coach and other material to record in their plant foldable. This will be their assessment for plant life cycles. We will also watch two time lapse videos on the stages of the pumpkin’s life cycle and then complete an activity that allows students to illustrate the life cycle. (seed, sprout, vine, flower, green pumpkin, mature pumpkin) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXLnCd4JMH4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WOrSPxegiw In Math, we will be working on a Thanksgiving activity packet. Students will make guest lists, determine the amount of turkey needed, shop for fixings, analyze nutritional numbers, solve elapsed time for cooking and preparation, develop seating arrangements, and finally solve some Black Friday shopping problems related to subtraction of discounts, time scheduling, and markdown mistakes. I am very excited about these activities, as I hope it will show them the importance of math in the everyday world. It is possible that we will not have time to complete the packet, so I am going to offer it as extra credit for anyone who returns the completed packet by Wednesday, December 3. I am attaching an additional copy in the event you need replacement pages. You will also notice there is a parent survey attached to this email. Students have copies of these in their homework folder. We want to know what YOU think about your child’s school. The information from the survey will help us improve student relationships, learning conditions, and the school’s overall environment. Your answers are confidential. Your answers will be combined with those of other parents. No one will be told how you answered. This survey is voluntary. You do NOT have to answer any question if you do not want to, but we hope you will answer as many questions as you can. Please complete these and return them to school as soon as possible. I am so thankful for each student. It is such a blessing to watch them grow and learn each day. I am also thankful for each of you (parents and guardians). Without your support and involvement, we would not have the success that we do. I pray that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and safe travels.
Hello! I am including documents for the week. Students also have graded test papers with their Dojo Report and newsletter that should be signed and returned tomorrow. In Math, we are continuing to work with Multiplication. Students are finishing up their Dream House projects today. Tomorrow, we will be completing a Multiplication Word Problem Scoot. Students love doing Scoots as a way to show what they know. I am including an example question from our Scoot if you would like to practice more at home. (You can also view this link to see how a Scoot works in our class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NucQTmMAkrA&list=UUj9wP2OM6iqWYtQ5nC5jiqg. This was a previous Scoot on telling time we did about a month ago.) We will practice facts and strategies at different center activities during the remainder of the week. I have also decided that we will NOT have a DREAM homework sheet this week. Students have been working extremely hard in class and deserve the reward of a homework break! J I do ask that students still complete their multiplication log, as it is very important that they study each day to help prepare for the Kiwanis tests each Friday. In Science, we will note observations as our bean plants germinate and sprout. This is a picture of one that is displayed in our classroom. Our entire 3rd grade courtyard window is covered with greenhouses. The children are captivated as they walk by making observations about the bean plant’s life cycle. We are also working to assemble a plant foldable that students will use to gather all important information about the plant life cycle and the jobs of each part of the plant. The information we record in this foldable throughout the week can be used to study/prepare for out plant test coming up. There are also excellent review videos about plants on Brain Pop, Jr.: http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/plants/
If you would like to view our Bean Plant video from last week…here’s the link again: https://animoto.com/play/l5WTSvjrbsOprCa3UIOtaA Please let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns. Also be reminded that Donuts for Dads is tomorrow morning beginning at 7am in the Cafeteria. There is no charge for WES students, and visitors are $1. We hope that you enjoy this special time with your student. Interims will be issued on Wednesday. Please remember to sign and return them the following day. Hello! Just wanted to share our hard work from today. Students are very excited about their greenhouses we created today. We will observe them and watch them as they germinate into seedlings. We also “dissected” a bean to view the parts of a seed: the seed coat, young plant, and food. Students were amazed when I pulled out the digital microscope and we could see the young plant up close! I have included a video of some pictures, but I have also attached the microscope shot so that you can see it up close. Hello, parents. I have attached all documents for the week. Please remember that students have graded test papers, newsletters, and Dojo Reports that need to be signed and returned tomorrow. In Science, we will have our summative assessment on Heat & Matter tomorrow. Students have vocabulary flashcards and study questions to study. I have also attached them for your convenience. On Wednesday, we will begin our unit on plant life cycles. In Math, we are continuing with multiplication. Students have been working extremely hard to learn their facts. They love getting to practice the songs each day. Last week, I had students complete a “practice” Kiwanis timed test. From this, we observed how many facts they were able to complete in 11 minutes and how many of those they answered correctly. We then set goals to improve our speed and accuracy. I can’t wait to pull these out next week and have students compare their new tests with them. I believe these kids will see improvement! Later this week, we will be completing an activity where students complete their dream house, relating it to multiplication and area. We will discuss that there are many career choices that will use math…I will provide examples of architects, interior decorators, painters, builders, contractors, etc. We will also read the book If I Built a House by Chris Van Dusen. This book describes an imaginative eight-year-old’s home design. Jack’s home is complete with a Racetrack Room, Flying Room, and gigantic slide. I can’t wait to see the designs of our students’ dream homes! We will be working on Math 4 Today Week #13. I have decided to let them complete the study guides in class so that it does not continue to add to their homework load. Our test will continue to be each Friday. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this week’s assignments. I am so proud of each one of these students and their desire to learn and actively participate in their education. They make by job a breeze!
Dear Parent(s): We completed our heat lab in class today. We discussed that there are many common misconceptions (misunderstandings) regarding sources of heat and insulators. Students know that they cover up with a blanket if they are cold, so they automatically assume that the blanket is a source of heat, however, it is actually trapping heat from their body and serving as an insulator. (Students are required to know the following sources of heat: sun, electricity, burning, rubbing, and living things.) I wanted to share a video of pictures. I have also postponed our science test until next Tuesday instead of this Friday, as we have not completed all of the activities and I want to give them ample time to prepare. Thanks! Greetings! I have attached all needed documents for the week. Please remember that there is no school for students tomorrow, as it is Election Day. If you are a registered voter, please go vote! We will be electing a new state superintendent of education, along with many other positions including governor. These two positions directly affect the education of your child, so I encourage you to research and let your voice be heard! In Science this week, we will finish up our study on heat and matter. I will be sending home study questions and vocabulary flash cards for their test on Friday. Students will be allowed to use their PASS Coach during the test to look up information from their text if needed. In Math, we will continue with Multiplication. Students have new multiplication logs. They have been instructed to cross off the Weekend block. I chose not to distribute them on Friday and give them the weekend off due to Halloween. Students have their DREAM homework sheets and Math 4 Today #12 Study Guide. Study guides are due on Thursday and Dream sheet/Multiplication Log are due on Friday. Dojo reports and graded test papers will be sent home today. Please sign these and return them on Wednesday. Please keep in mind that these reports are reflective of the previous week. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Thanks so much for your continued support!
