Special thanks to Ms. Mitchell's sister, Jennifer, for bringing in all of our party supplies. These kiddos went through 18 {EIGHT-TEEN} pizzas and 60 cupcakes!!! We watched Home and had a great time socializing!

Each year at yearbook signing day, we always take a class picture. It is always bittersweet and even more so this year since I have a third grader myself. It's hard to believe that this is the Class of 2025. It will be here before we know it! At our Baccalaureate service Sunday, they played this video. It really touched me and made me cherish every second, as we fly through life. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! (Sorry -- Kleenex not provided!) Please enjoy the snapshots from yearbook signing! I'll be sure to send more from our party this afternoon as well! This year has been such an amazing year and I have thoroughly enjoyed spending the school year with your children. They inspire me on a daily basis and I am so thankful to have been blessed with each of them. Thank you so much for all of your support through the year.
Please remember that tomorrow is Awards Day beginning at 8am sharp in the cafeteria. Students do not need to bring their bookbags. Thursday is Field Day and we have nothing planned for Friday (attendance will not be counted for the remainder of the week). Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Thank you for a wonderful year!
The Critter Keeper came today and was so awesome! He didn't just share about the animals, but also taught many life lessons and how to control and have a "healthy fear". The students loved it! Please enjoy the photos in the video below.
Good afternoon! Below you will find our third grade newsletter with upcoming information. Students have a copy of these with their Dojo report and several flyers with important information from the school regarding upcoming events. Please notice that our awards program is next Wednesday at 8am in the cafeteria. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are all half days for students. They will be dismissed at 11:30am and lunch will NOT be served on these days. We will have our class party on Tuesday (May 24th). Awards is on Wednesday, as already stated, and our Field Day is on Thursday. We do not have anything planned for Friday and attendance will not be recorded on the 1/2 days. Please remember that The Critter Keeper will be here on Wednesday. Each student should bring $1 by tomorrow. Students will also receive their Kiwanis medals on Thursday if they have mastered their facts. They will be able to try again tomorrow and Wednesday if they are not already on the list to receive a medal. Please encourage them to practice at home and also to stay focused during the tests, as they are timed. This week in Science we will continue with our "Eco-friendly" theme as we focus on protecting habitats and preventing change. Our activities this week will revolve around the movie Hoot. Today students researched about the burrowing owl and recorded important facts about them. Tomorrow, we will watch the movie and proceed with other activities related to owls, nocturnal animals, and protecting habitats. Last week, I taught students about coordinate planes and plotting ordered pair. They may have shown you the the flower picture that they created from coordinates. We will continue this practice as they complete a picture of an owl. If they are unable to finish it during class time, they may work on it at home. This task is very demanding and can be somewhat difficult from them but they always become extremely engage and determined to complete the picture. We will also work on Math 4 Today Week #33. We will complete the test on Friday, however, this grade will not be recorded in the gradebook. There is no homework for the week other than getting Dojo report signed and bringing in $1 for Critter Keeper.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. I hope everyone has a great week! I surprised the class with another STEM activity this morning. We completed a challenge using my HotWheels Speedometry kit. Students worked together to create a track/ramp that would produce the fastest and furthest traveling car. They had a ball!!! We also found out that Connor was at a drag strip in Commerce, Georgia. His mom was nice enough to arrange FaceTiming us so everyone could see and hear the dragsters! The top speed was 228 miles per hour! I had to leave sick on Friday, so I decided to postpone Friday's STEM Challenge, rather than leaving it for the sub. We completed the challenge this morning. Their task was to create the tallest tower using 50 plastic cups. They loved this and came away with many "life lessons" that we discussed afterwards. We had many ties, as 14 cups high was the tallest anyone could build. Please enjoy the pictures below:
Extra Credit Opportunities
The 3rd Grade newsletter can be found above. Please note that students need to send in $1 for The Critter Keeper by next Tuesday. This is an extension of our last Watershed program, They have a paper flyer with more information.
Also, please review Dojo reports, sign, and return them tomorrow. If you have any further questions or concerns, please let me know!
Today we completed the Straw Tower challenge. Students had 45 minutes to build a tower that would support a tennis ball. It could not be attached to the table and was measured at the point the tennis ball rested. Students had a little more difficult time with this challenge, but I believe they learned MANY valuable lessons!
The most important lesson I shared with them today was that they could have the tallest tower that could hold all the tennis balls in the world, but if they had been ugly to their teammates...hurt their feelings...or made them feel left out, they were not a true "winner". Many teams experience some failure today, as they were unable to create a tower in their time limit. I explained to them that in life, we often learn more from our failures that we do our successes. Challenges, frustration, and catastrophes often motive our future success. Congratulations to today's winning teams -- please enjoy the Animoto video below!
Today's STEM was The Boat Challenge. Students were so excited about their boats and made some great observations and predictions throughout the activity.
Results are posted below and there is an Animoto of pictures! Enjoy! Number of Paperclips the boat held before sinking:
Our first STEM Challenge went better than expected and now they can't wait for tomorrow to come so they can learn about their new challenge!
Please enjoy the Animoto video below of pictures and video clips from today's Challenge:
We will be completing a STEM challenge each day this week. I have listed the needed materials below. If you have any of the items around the house or would be willing to purchase them and donate, please let me know!
's so hard to believe that it's already May! Time definitely flies when you're having fun! This week will fly by even faster with what we have planned for this week! We have several STEM activities planned. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. We focus on these areas together not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, but also because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively. STEM is an interdisciplinary and applied approach that is coupled with hands-on, problem-based learning. I think the kids will love these activities and I can’t wait to see their brains at work. I’ll be sure to send pictures of their projects! The activities include: The Paper Chain Challenge, The Straw Structure Challenge, The Paperclip Boat Challenge, and The Cup Tower Challenge. We will also be working on Math 4 Today Week #31 and spend a great deal of time focusing on our Kiwanis Facts. Students have until May 19th to master this test with 100%. We will practice using flashcards, iPad apps, and skill/drill tests. Please reinforce these practices at home so we can meet our goal of 80% mastery from both classes together. Tomorrow, I will be sharing an extra credit activity for Math. I am attaching the packet below for your convenience. This project is due by Wednesday, May 11th. It will count as two 100 test grades in math. If you need extra credit in Science, you may create and write a postcard to send to the Watershed Ecology program. Describe your favorite program, tell what all you learned, and thank them for the experiences they brought to our school. (Mr. Lembcke is our presenters name.) This activity will only be worth one 100 test grade. The newsletter is attached below. We do not have any homework this week. Dojo reports and papers will be sent home today. Please sign them and return them tomorrow. Please let me know if you have ANY questions!
