Good afternoon! Sorry for the delay in my email. I have attached the DREAM Sheet, 3rd Grade Newsletter, and Multiplication Log for the week. In Science we are learning all about habitats. On Wednesday, we will go to Watershed for a lesson titled “Habitats for Sale” (If you haven’t sent $1, please do so by Wednesday.) We are also reading about habitats and changes in a habitat with our PASS Coach. (attached) We will talk about endangered species and animals that are extinct. There are several great Brain Pop, Jr. clips that go along with this! On Thursday and Friday morning, we will be going to the library to do research about habitats. The students will then teach about their habitats to their classmates! http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/habitats/ http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/conservation/extinctandendangeredspecies/preview.weml In Math, we are continuing to work with multiplication and multiplication word problems. We will also work in small groups to target our weaknesses according to our recent MAP Scores. We are working on Math 4 Today #26 and our test will be on Thursday because of the field trip. Homework and Multiplication logs will be collected Friday morning before we leave. I will collect Dojo reports tomorrow. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns! (We had an AMAZING SC History Day! The kids were extremely well behaved for the visitors and seemed to enjoy each event. I will follow with pictures later this afternoon!)
Ada's dad, Josh Epton, stopped by our class on the way to Woodruff Primary from our school. Mr. Epton is a former Gable Middle School teacher, and is now minister of music at First Baptist North Spartanburg. Mr. Epton and I went to North Greenville together and were in many Education classes with each other. He is so talented...and animated...and entertaining...the kids ABSOLUTELY loved him! (Except for Ada who said he was 'ruining her reputation' - haha!) I joked and told them that this would go right along with our next Science lesson on FOOD CHAINS! :) I failed to mention about the Science extra credit in my earlier email. I gave out the information to students today, and I have attached it for your convenience. I found an awesome (and FREE) website called Switch Zoo. http://switchzoo.com/make_play.htm There are several different activities, but the “Build an Online Habitat” and “Switch Zoo” are my favorites! If you click on “Switch Zoo”, it allows you to build your own animal. With this assignment, students should create their own animal and then log facts and observations about that animal on the sheet provided. These facts will include things about their habitat, how it obtains basic needs, and adaptations. If you do not have internet access at home, students can just use their creativity to design their animal. This assignment is due by next Friday, April 4th and will be worth 2 test grades! I hope everyone has fun learning and creating!
Our class will be featured on our school news show on Wednesday. Ms. Beech, the librarian, heard about our chicks and wanted to share it with everyone! The Chicks are hatching!!!!! Good morning! As you can see, we have 2 baby chicks so far! Another chick is pipping from a 3rd egg, and we are hopeful for more! I don’t know that I’ve ever seen students so excited about Life Science! I have attached the DREAM Worksheet, Newsletter, and Multiplication Log for the week. In Science, we will finish up our study of plant and animal adaptations. Our test will be on Wednesday. Students will bring home their study guides today. (Attached) They also have many other resources in their Orange Folder to help them study. On Thursday, we will be introduced to our unit on habitats, and on Friday we will be gone on our Field Trip. I am really excited about our habitat unit! We will read about the different habitats on Thursday in our PASS Coach. On Tuesday, we will attend a Watershed program about habitats (Please send $1 by Friday), and then on Thursday and Friday we will be visiting Ms. Beech in the library where students will research the different habitats and then teach their classmates about what they have learned! In Math, we are going to be working on multi-digit multiplication and multiplication word problems. We have a “Scoot” activity planned for Wednesday where students will move around to different stations in the room to practice their word problem skills. We are also working on Math 4 Today #25. We will do Day 3 & Day 4 on Wednesday and our test will be moved to Thursday because of the field trip. I will collect DREAM sheet and Multiplication logs on Friday before we leave! Please be reminded that our Awards day is this Tuesday at 8:15am in the cafeteria. Also remember to have your child wear his or her Class T-Shirt for the Field Trip Friday. (Burnette’s homeroom is black and Mitchell’s homeroom is blue.) Students are also asked to bring a small blanket or towel to sit on for lunch. Please make sure that your child’s name is on the tag. Students may also bring money to purchase crafts made by the Native Americans. The souvenirs begin at $1 and go up. I would think $5 would be the max you should send for safety purposes. If you will remember, I emailed before MAP testing began about Study Island Logs. (I have attached the email again for your convenience.) We are beginning these today in the Math Computer lab. I will review these and send them home next Monday with graded test papers. Please make sure to sign and return Dojo Reports and test papers for this week. (Dojo points reset today for the new 9 weeks!) I hope everyone has a wonderful day! Please email me with any questions or concerns!
Today we discuss the physical adaptation of Camouflage. We also discussed the behavioral adaptation of Mimicry, since the two are often confused. Students were given a blank butterfly and were challenged to create the best camouflage for the butterfly’s habitat (our classroom). They had so much fun and I was amazed at their creativity! Hope you all enjoy the photos! We also read the attached article and answered the questions about “Camouflage Creatures”. I am attaching the butterfly template in the event your student want to do more creations at home!
I shared our work with Dr. Workman and he sent me a link to show the kids. This guy is an artist in Paris and uses camouflage as his artwork. So cool!
http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2013/01/the-invisible-man-artist-liu-bolin-hides-in-the-city/ Good morning! I have attached the DREAM worksheet, Newsletter, and Multiplication Log for this week. You will notice that tonight and tomorrow’s section on the DREAM sheet is just a reminder about PASS testing. We will be PASS Testing tomorrow and Wednesday. Tomorrow will be an extended response to a specific writing prompt, and Wednesday will be multiple choice questions. Please encourage your child to take their time and do their very best! In Science this week, we will continue with our study of adaptations; primarily focusing on animal adaptations. We will discuss in depth camouflage, hibernation, and migration. Links are provided for Brain Pop and Study Jams clips. (Brain Pop Login – Discus14; Password – research) http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/camouflage/preview.weml http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/hibernation/preview.weml http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/migration/preview.weml http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm We originally planned to test adaptations this week, but since we are behind and also have PASS Testing, we will wait until next week. In Math, we are currently working on Math 4 Today #24. We will have our test on Friday, as usual. We are reviewing the concept of perimeter. Students often confuse perimeter and area, so we want to be sure they have an understand of both. We will practice this throughout the week, and it is also on the DREAM sheet for Wednesday and Thursday night. http://www.brainpopjr.com/math/measurement/perimeter/preview.weml http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/measurement/perimeter.htm Please remember that Multiplication Study Logs are due Friday. These count as a homework assignment and as a grade. We are having our homework celebration this Friday, and unfortunately, some students will not be able to attend since they had 3 or more homework strikes during this 9 weeks. (Parents – I have emailed you individually if your child will not be going.) As of today, all students have completed their Math MAP Testing. I am extremely proud of their hard work and the growth that they have made. We updated blue cards (in the back of their agendas) this morning, and set PASS Goals. Please be sure to look at these and the growth they have made throughout the year. I am extremely proud of them! Please email me with any questions and concerns. I hope everyone has a wonderful day!
For my fellow eagle watchers: http://m.wsbtv.com/videos/news/new-video-berry-college-eagle-protects-baby-from/vCS96S/ Good morning! DREAM homework sheet, Third Grade Newsletter, and Multiplication Log are attached. I have also attached the field trip permission slip – money is due by THIS Friday (14th). In Science, we will continue our study of adaptations. We are a little behind with plant adaptations, but we will catch up tomorrow and then finish the week with animal adaptations. I have included the PASS Coach that goes along with these lessons. We will do several activities with camouflage, hibernation, and migration this week. Students will be required to know the difference between a physical adaptation (When the body of a living thing changes to allow the animal to survive in its environment) and behavioral adaptation (Things a living thing does in order to survive in its environment). I am also including the links again to the Study Jams and Brain Pop: http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/camouflage/preview.weml http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/hibernation/preview.weml http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/migration/preview.weml http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/plants/plantadaptations/preview.weml http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/plants/plant-adaptations.htm Our test on plant and animal adaptations will be next Friday. I will send home a study guide next week. In Math, we are working on area. We will discuss using our multiplication skills to find the area of a shape, but we will also talk about sub-dividing shapes to find area. This has shown up on Study Island and always gives them trouble! I am including an explanation so that you can see what they are expected to do. We will practice this on our DREAM sheet this week, also. The Study Jams clip below is an excellent explanation as well. Don’t worry about the “Watch Out” section, though, since 3rd graders are not required to know how to find the area of a triangle. http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/measurement/area-irregular-figures.htm We are working on Math 4 Today Week #23 with an assessment on Friday. Dojo reports and graded test papers will come home today. Please be sure to sign them and return them tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. Special thanks to Rebecca Morin for sharing the photo of Gavin with me. She said, “Sunday morning feeding time…While one bird sat on the baby keeping it warm the other parent brought in food (small bird) then left again. The parent that was sitting on the baby then proceeded to feed the baby! All my kids sat and watched in amazement. What a great experience to watch!!!” I’ve been keeping the Eagle Cam up as we work on our Monday Math today. The kids are mesmerized! The link again is: http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/ if you want to view it from home. Have a marvelous Monday!
The students wanted me to share the link to this live feed of a Bald Eagle nest at Berry College in Georgia so that they could view it from home. This goes right along with our Life Science Unit – Life cycles, habitats, food chains.
The first egg hatched on Saturday, Feb. 22nd. The parent eagles can be seen feeding and nurturing the young eaglet. A second egg remains in the nest, but experts say it is not likely to hatch. http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/ The students were so excited to watch this today. They made the connection of our eggs in the incubator and said that they can’t wait to see how many of our eggs hatch! (Today is day 5 of 21!) When we were viewing the stream earlier today, we actually got to see the parent eagle feeding the eaglet! What an awesome experience! Students are coming home today with a cabbage plant donated by Bonnie Plants. They also have a flyer about the Scholarship contest, rules, and regulations in their red homework folder. I have attached it for your convenience. In 2002, Bonnie Plants started the 3rd Grade Cabbage Program with a mission to inspire a love of vegetable gardening in young people. Each year, they distribute more than one million free cabbage plants to 3rd Grade classrooms across the country. As part of the program, Bonnie Plants awards a $1,000 scholarship to one student in each state. Teachers submit a class winner and a child is chosen via random drawing by each state’s Director of Agriculture. The link for more information is below: http://bonniecabbageprogram.com/ Submissions must be turned in to me by September 20th. (Even though your student will be in 4th grade, you still submit them to me.) You can also read about this year’s winner from Union, SC in an article from The Spartanburg Herald Journal: http://www.goupstate.com/article/20140110/ARTICLES/140119973 This is a GREAT opportunity! I hope everyone will choose to participate. Good luck!
Good morning! I have attached the 3rd grade newsletter, DREAM homework sheet, and multiplication log. If you are in my homeroom, please remember that our Special Lunch is this Wednesday at 10:40am. I need to know if you are coming so the cafeteria ladies can plan accordingly. You can RSVP at the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1aoKxLxgUMD8yoU5EgU9y21qV1ymlEFosD-GuRrICsUc/viewform If I have not received an RSVP from you, I will add an RSVP form to the bottom of your child’s DOJO report and send it home today. In Science, we are continuing our Life Science unit. Even though we have already completed the assessment on life cycles last week, we are going to continue discussing life cycles as we observe life cycle of a chicken. Last week, we watched “The Magic School Bus Cracks a Yolk” that documents the chicken’s life cycle. I have brought in my incubator and some fertile eggs and we will experience the life cycle ourselves! The kids are super excited! Today, we are simply regulating the temperature of the incubator (100° F) and will place the eggs inside later this afternoon if the incubator is at the proper temperature. At day 7, we will begin candling the eggs to predict which eggs we believe will hatch. Hopefully on day 21 we will confirm our predictions and our eggs will hatch! Photo 1: Can you tell that Gavin is excited Photo 2: Nehemiah is using his measurement skills to monitor the thermometer. Shakira can’t wait to add the eggs! Photo 3: Molly is checking the temperature during her class time. As we observe the life cycle, we will continue through our life science unit and learn about adaptations of plants and animals. (PASS Coach is attached.) This week, we will mainly focus on adaptations of plants. On Tuesday and Wednesday we will read and learn about them and then on Thursday, we will actually experiment to determine how leaf shape, thickness, and texture are adaptations for plants. Students will construct their own leaves out of regular paper, construction paper, and wax paper. We will also have different leaf sizes and shapes. We will then apply water to the different leaves and observe the differences. I think this experience will help them better understand how the leaves of actual plants differ according to their habitat. I am including links to all Brain Pop, Jr. and Study Jams that go along with the adaptation lessons: http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/camouflage/preview.weml http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/hibernation/preview.weml http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/migration/preview.weml http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/plants/plantadaptations/preview.weml http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/plants/plant-adaptations.htm In Math, we will continue revisiting our unit on Measurement. This week our focus will be measuring to the nearest ½ inch and nearest ¼ inch. We will also take our measurement data and represent it on a line plot. I will be printing out paper rulers for students to keep in their folder. As extra practice, have them measure things from home. Be sure to have them measure to the nearest ½ inch and ¼ inch. The illustration below is very helpful when showing them fractions on a ruler. I am so proud of the progress our students are making on their multiplication facts. We will complete another Kiwanis test on Wednesday in class. I am hoping that we are going to add a good many names to our medalists board. So far we have 22 medalist from both classes! This is an awesome accomplishment! I know we will have many more before the end of the year. We are working on Math 4 Today #22 this week, and our test will be on Friday as usual. I am attaching the invitation for our Third Grade Field Trip again. We will be visiting an Indian reservation in Gray Court on March 28th. Permission slips and payment ($5) are due by March 14th. Please feel free to visit the website below to acquire more information about the reservation and activities. This will be a wonderful experience and will foster a true understanding of Native American culture. http://www.paialowereasterncherokeenationsc.com/page7/page7.html Be reminded that we are continuing our MAP testing in the computer labs on Monday and Thursday. Attendance on these days is very important. Also, please encourage your children to take their time and do their very best. You can view their scores from Fall and Winter, along with their goal for this testing window in the back of their agenda on the blue card. I can’t wait to see how much they improve their scores! Dojo reports and graded test papers will be sent home today. Please sign and return them by tomorrow. Please email me with any questions or concerns.
