Hello! I have attached the documents for this week. Students have graded test papers attached to their newsletter and Dojo report. Please be sure to sign and return Dojo reports by tomorrow. In Science, we are continuing our study of matter. We will discuss changing state, insulators, conductors, and sources of heat this week. We have an exciting exploration planned to help them understand the difference between insulators and sources of heat. Students are required to know 5 different sources: rubbing, burning, electricity, the sun, and living things. It is a common misconception for students to believe that things like blankets, mittens, coats, etc. are sources of heat when in fact they are insulators of the heat our body (living thing) is producing. Our test will be next week. In math, we are working on Math 4 Today #11. Study guides will be distributed tomorrow and are due Thursday. The test will be on Friday, as usual. We are continuing our study of multiplication. Students have enjoyed learning about arrays by “making cookies” and are also excited to learn the skip counting method by practicing our songs. So far, we have learned the 3s, 4s, and 6s. Students have their DREAM homework sheet that is due Friday, and they also have a new assignment that will also be due on Friday. Students will be required to keep a weekly multiplication log of their study time. These are collected on Friday as a homework assignment and will also be recorded as a grade. I have attached the document in the event you need a replacement. Please let me know if you have questions regarding this new assignment. Don’t forget that you can access the multiplication songs (with words) on my website: www.3-burnette.weebly.com or by visiting my YouTube playlist (no words): http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=FLj9wP2OM6iqWYtQ5nC5jiqg As always, I am enjoying watching your children grow and learn each day. They are a constant blessing to me and I look forwarding to seeing them each day. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Parents, as I discussed the multiplication songs with students in class, I realized that I failed to mention a few things in my email. The link provided at the top of the attachment will take you to a playlist that has the actual Just Dance videos from YouTube. (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=FLj9wP2OM6iqWYtQ5nC5jiqg) Since we are just learning these, it may be more helpful for your students to use the videos provided on my website (http://3-burnette.weebly.com/student-sites.html) which features students actually singing the MULTIPLCIATION words over top the actual song lyrics. Please let me know if you have trouble using either of these links. I also failed to mention earlier that since today is the last day of 1st Nine Weeks, we have reset Dojo Points. Students are encouraged to work hard to achieve new point levels so that they can be rewarded! Now that we have a 9 weeks period under our belt and students understand our expectations, we will require students to work a little harder to earn points in class. Please let us know if you have any questions!
Hello, parents! Students have graded test papers and Dojo Reports in their homework folder. Please remember to sign and return these by tomorrow. I have also attached the DREAM homework sheet. Student copies were mistakenly ran as two separate sheets, rather than front and back, so they are stapled together. Please accept my apologies! In Science we are working in a new until on States of Matter. Today we explored three different interactive activities. The links are provided in the event your child wants to explore more from home! http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/solid_liquids.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/gases.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/changing_state.shtml We will do several other activities throughout the week exploring the different properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Students are responsible for knowing the difference in measurable and observable properties. We will discuss color, size, luster, texture, odor, temperature (warm/cold to touch) as observable properties and mass, volume, temperature, and length as measurable properties. We will not have an assessment on this until next week. http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/matter/ In Math, we are beginning multiplication! We will begin introducing multiplication as groups and/or arrays. We have several fun activities planned. We will also use the following website in class: www.multiplication.com/games/play/carls-cookie-capers Please feel free to allow your student to work more from home. All third grade students are required to know facts up to 100 (10x10). We will begin by discussion the 0,1,2s and quickly move onto the 3s. We teach multiplication and skip counting by several songs paired with the Just Dance Videos. I have attached the song titles and a link to the videos as part of this message. I will introduce 1-2 songs per week until we know them all and will continue with them throughout the year. Once we have introduced all strands, we will begin taking timed test each week. Any student that scores 100% in 11 minutes will receive a golden Kiwanis medal at the end of the year. I have attached the test we use in the event you want to begin practicing with it at home now. Also beginning next week, we will begin a multiplication log to go along with our weekly homework that will be collected each Friday. Much like a reading log, we asks students to log their practice and study time with their multiplication facts. I have attached a sample for you to view in advance. This homework will also be counted for a grade. I will send home more information with the actual log next week. Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of any assistance to you or your student. Also, be reminded that we have Parent-Teacher Conference Thursday from 3-7 and Friday from 9-12. If you are unsure of your time, please refer to your student’s agenda or email me and I will gladly sending you a time confirmation.
I am SO excited because I am finally able to access my blog from our school network! This will allow me to update the website during my planning as I email out the information. Yay! I'm feeling so excited I think I'll give a special DOJO point to anyone that comments!
Good morning! Students have their Dojo reports and graded test papers in their red homework folders. Please remember to sign them and return them by tomorrow. I can statements and agenda layout are also attached. Please continue to help us hold students accountable for recording them in their agenda each week. In Math, we are continuing with our study of Mass & Volume. Students have been working to measure using grams, kilograms, liters, and milliliters. We are working on Math 4 Today #9. The study sheet is attached. Please remind students that these are due on Thursday. Once we go over them in class, a parent signature verifying that your student has studied is worth 5 extra points on the test given on Friday. The DREAM sheet is attached and will review the mass and volume practice from class. Dream sheets are collected on Friday. In Science we will finish up on our Sound unit this week. Students really seem to be enjoying all of the learning activities we are doing with sound right now. Making duck calls on Thursday was a huge hit! Students enjoyed learning that they could manipulate the pitch and volume of their duck calls by changing the length and force. Last Friday, we also explored an interactive website about sound. The links are provided if they want to practice again with it at home. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/sound_hearing.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/changing_sounds.shtml Another link for a great review on sound is: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/energy-light-sound/sound.htm Today, we created flashcards for our sound vocabulary. These are the vocabulary words that will be on the test on Wednesday. Tomorrow, we will complete a multiple choice study guide with questions provided from our instructional computer program, Study Island. All of these documents are attached for your convenience. On Thursday and Friday, we will begin introducing our new science unit on Properties and changes in matter. It’s one of my favorite units! Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns!
Students really seem to be enjoying all of the learning activities we are doing with sound right now. We had a “special visitor” today that taught us about the science behind duck calls. We also watched two clips that allow us to recognize that what we are doing in science can be used in everyday life and as part of our career choice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAWBGN2VbXk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPvh0PrRqu4 Tomorrow, we will conduct an investigation that allows students to make their own duck calls with straws and discover how they can manipulate the pitch and volume of the calls. On Friday, we will explore an interactive website about sound. The links are provided if they want to practice more with it at home. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/sound_hearing.shtmlhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/changing_sounds.shtml Another link for a great video is: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/energy-light-sound/sound.htm Next Monday, we will create flashcards for our sound vocabulary. These are the vocabulary words that will be on the test on Wednesday. On Tuesday, we will complete a multiple choice study guide with questions provided from our instructional computer program, Study Island. All of these documents are attached if you wish to begin studying in advance. Our music teacher, Mr. Parton, has also been exposing the students to many musical instruments and activities teaching them about sound. The “Boomwackers” serve as an awesome visual tool to remind them that length affects pitch. The shorter the boomwacker, the higher the pitch…and the longer it is the lower it becomes. They have also explored that sound can travel through all 3 states of matter by submersing a triangle into water after being struck – the kids were amazed that they could actually SEE the sound waves and vibrations. I am very appreciative that he is offering learning experiences of content standards that successfully integrate into the Music classroom. Mr. Workman also shared an AWESOME app with me today. Unfortunately it is only available for iProducts. There are many fun interactive explorations related to sound that probe higher levels of thinking. Be sure to download it and share it with your student! (Thank you, Mr. Workman!) https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/sound-uncovered/id598835017?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D2 Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns! I look forward having your students show what they know next week with our sound assessment! Thanks!
Good afternoon! I have attached the DREAM sheet and Third Grade Newsletter for the week. Students have both in their red homework folder, along with Dojo Reports and graded test papers. Please be sure to sign these and return them tomorrow. I have also included the agenda layout for the week for your convenience. Students are expected to fill in I can statements and copy homework each day. Please help us hold them accountable! In Science, we are beginning a new unit on Sound. To begin our unit, I gave each student a Word Spider and asked them to guess what our new unit would be. This activity allowed me to access their previous knowledge of sound and the vocabulary. Those that were not familiar with the terms were unable to guess the correct unit topic. Guesses ranged from energy, electricity, vibrations, music, etc. Although many had some close guesses, I only had a handful that identified SOUND as our new topic. We will continue throughout the week and into next week learning about sound. We have some exciting activities planned that will allow students to explore through inquiry based investigations. We will not have an assessment until next week. Helpful videos: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/energy-light-sound/sound.htm http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/energy/sound/preview.weml We finished up our time unit last week in Math. I have included a link to a clip from Ms. Mitchell’s homeroom where they are performing a Scoot assessment. The kids love coming in and seeing the cards out! The constant movement and brisk pacing forces the students to stay focused and apply their knowledge. We are working in partners today to complete an assessment involving real-world problems solving for elapsed time. Tomorrow we will continue in our measurement strand and being a unit on mass and volume. The DREAM sheet is a continuation of the practice we will complete in class. We are working on Math 4 Today week 8. I will send home a study guide tomorrow (attached) which is due by Thursday. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Have a great afternoon!
