Students really seem to be enjoying all of the learning activities we are doing with sound right now. We had a “special visitor” today that taught us about the science behind duck calls. We also watched two clips that allow us to recognize that what we are doing in science can be used in everyday life and as part of our career choice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAWBGN2VbXk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPvh0PrRqu4 Tomorrow, we will conduct an investigation that allows students to make their own duck calls with straws and discover how they can manipulate the pitch and volume of the calls. On Friday, we will explore an interactive website about sound. The links are provided if they want to practice more with it at home. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/sound_hearing.shtmlhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/changing_sounds.shtml Another link for a great video is: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/energy-light-sound/sound.htm Next Monday, we will create flashcards for our sound vocabulary. These are the vocabulary words that will be on the test on Wednesday. On Tuesday, we will complete a multiple choice study guide with questions provided from our instructional computer program, Study Island. All of these documents are attached if you wish to begin studying in advance. Our music teacher, Mr. Parton, has also been exposing the students to many musical instruments and activities teaching them about sound. The “Boomwackers” serve as an awesome visual tool to remind them that length affects pitch. The shorter the boomwacker, the higher the pitch…and the longer it is the lower it becomes. They have also explored that sound can travel through all 3 states of matter by submersing a triangle into water after being struck – the kids were amazed that they could actually SEE the sound waves and vibrations. I am very appreciative that he is offering learning experiences of content standards that successfully integrate into the Music classroom. Mr. Workman also shared an AWESOME app with me today. Unfortunately it is only available for iProducts. There are many fun interactive explorations related to sound that probe higher levels of thinking. Be sure to download it and share it with your student! (Thank you, Mr. Workman!) https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/sound-uncovered/id598835017?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D2 Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns! I look forward having your students show what they know next week with our sound assessment! Thanks!
