Hello, parents! Students have graded test papers and Dojo Reports in their homework folder. Please remember to sign and return these by tomorrow. I have also attached the DREAM homework sheet. Student copies were mistakenly ran as two separate sheets, rather than front and back, so they are stapled together. Please accept my apologies! In Science we are working in a new until on States of Matter. Today we explored three different interactive activities. The links are provided in the event your child wants to explore more from home! http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/solid_liquids.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/gases.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/changing_state.shtml We will do several other activities throughout the week exploring the different properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Students are responsible for knowing the difference in measurable and observable properties. We will discuss color, size, luster, texture, odor, temperature (warm/cold to touch) as observable properties and mass, volume, temperature, and length as measurable properties. We will not have an assessment on this until next week. http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/matter/ In Math, we are beginning multiplication! We will begin introducing multiplication as groups and/or arrays. We have several fun activities planned. We will also use the following website in class: www.multiplication.com/games/play/carls-cookie-capers Please feel free to allow your student to work more from home. All third grade students are required to know facts up to 100 (10x10). We will begin by discussion the 0,1,2s and quickly move onto the 3s. We teach multiplication and skip counting by several songs paired with the Just Dance Videos. I have attached the song titles and a link to the videos as part of this message. I will introduce 1-2 songs per week until we know them all and will continue with them throughout the year. Once we have introduced all strands, we will begin taking timed test each week. Any student that scores 100% in 11 minutes will receive a golden Kiwanis medal at the end of the year. I have attached the test we use in the event you want to begin practicing with it at home now. Also beginning next week, we will begin a multiplication log to go along with our weekly homework that will be collected each Friday. Much like a reading log, we asks students to log their practice and study time with their multiplication facts. I have attached a sample for you to view in advance. This homework will also be counted for a grade. I will send home more information with the actual log next week. Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of any assistance to you or your student. Also, be reminded that we have Parent-Teacher Conference Thursday from 3-7 and Friday from 9-12. If you are unsure of your time, please refer to your student’s agenda or email me and I will gladly sending you a time confirmation.
