Hello, everyone! Below, you will find information regarding this week in Math and Science. Please remember that this is Parent-Teacher Conference week and there is no school for students on Friday. Unlike WPS, we are not required to hold a conference for every child. If I am requiring a conference for your child, I have sent home a request last week and again this week. Please be sure to respond! If you did not receive a request from me, I do not find it necessary to schedule a conference. Since this is a short week, homework and testing schedule are a little different. Please pay close attention to the agenda schedule for due dates and test prep. Please remember that you can click on the agenda photo to download an additional copy of the homework pages. In Math this week, we are introducing and developing an understanding of fractions. There are several great videos on Brain Pop, Jr. that your child can watch to review. https://jr.brainpop.com/math/fractions/ We are also working on Math 4 Today #9. We will go over the study guide in class on Wednesday and our test will be on Thursday this week. Please continue to review addition and subtraction with and without borrowing so that your child continues to do well on the Operation Quick Check quizzes. Additional practice can be created and downloaded at the following site: http://www.math-aids.com/Mixed_Problems/Mixed_Problems_Worksheets_MV.html In science, we are continuing through Chapter 2 Lesson 1 where we explore how electricity is transferred in a circuit. I found a great video on YouTube that helps explain how a circuit works to light a bulb. Students had a great time exploring this last week in our inquiry lab. Last week, students were given materials to explore creating a circuit to light a light bulb. Before beginning the activity, we discussed the meaning of INQUIRY and also PERSISTENCE. They were given 10 minutes to work with their table to see if they could complete a circuit. As with true inquiry, none of the groups were able to create the circuit on their own. As I walked around, I got tickled at the conversation of one of the groups. Greta exclaimed to her group, "This is IMPOSSIBLE!" Another of her group members, Abigail, said, "Come on, Greta...think POSITIVE!" Greta then argued back, "I'm POSITIVE this is IMPOSSIBLE!" Once I showed them the requirements for completing a circuit and that it COULD be done, they were bursting with excitement to try it. All of their faces lit up as the bulbs did! Students then created an open circuit where they inserted 5 different objects (paperclip, notecard, penny, plastic spoon, and tinfoil) to test their conductivity. Please enjoy the picture below from their inquiry lab. This was definitely a memorable learning experience for all of them! Dojo reports, third grade newsletters, and graded papers are being sent home today. Please sign them and return them tomorrow. Math papers are missing from their stack, as I was out of town from Thursday - Sunday. Tests from Friday will be held until the new nine weeks and their report card grades are not reflective of these scores. (Report Cards are issued Wednesday). Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns! Have a great week!
