As you are all aware, I have been working with Ms. Mitchell to integrate a focus on writing skills within our Science content. (We are hopeful that this integration and extra practice will improve their writing skills and help prepare them for the writing portion of state testing.) We have achieved this integration through the use of COPS on the Lesson Checks we complete with each Science Lesson. Students are continually reminded of these expectations with the anchor charts posted in my room. I have modeled expectations for their writing on these assignments and I patrol and give tickets while students are working.
Also, in an effort to help distribute the 'weight' of each question, I have added a multiple choice component to the back of these assignments. Since their writing skills, short answer questions, and multiple choice questions will be weighted differently, I will included a "Grading Breakdown" at the bottom of each assignment.
As I mentioned in my Monday Message, we will also be working on a Text Dependent Writing Prompt this week in Science. I will use the following passages and prompt to model the process. Conservation Article Human Influence Read the two passages about conservation. Write an essay describing ways that you can conserve resources at your home or school and explain why it is important to conserve resources. Be sure to cite evidence from the text in your answer. Next week, students will complete their own Text Dependent writing using two articles about natural resources. I have created several presentation slides to use for instruction as I model the process with them this week. I have included them below so that you can reinforce these skills when students are writing at home.
