Yesterday and today, we completed a science investigation titled "Melting Marshmallows". We are using ourmini-board format, which should help them with the layout of their Science Fair Project. The driving question was: Which liquid will dissolve a marshmallow the fastest? We tested water, cranberry juice, vinegar, and soda.. Please complete the poll below to tally your prediction.
Our outcome today was very different than we were expecting. To be honest, we were a little disappointed with the results. Not much melting! :(
We found that the vinegar had caused the most "melting" even though it had not melted as much as we thought it would have. When we turned it with forceps, it came apart easily and was much smaller on the side that was in the vinegar. The coke and the cranberry juice "stained" the marshmallow and made them soggy. There was some evidence floating in the liquid and on the side of the cup that showed it had dissolved some. The water had only made the marshmallow soggy. It hadn't dissolved any.
After making observations of our own marshmallows from both homerooms, we took a "field trip" to Mrs. Watson's room to check out her marshmallows. She had much different results! Check them out...
We discussed how it is important to conduct the experiment several times before reaching a conclusion to be sure the results are consistent.
Please comment below to respond to the following: Why do you think we had different results from Mrs. Watson's class? Why is it important to do your test at least 3 times? Have you ever conducted an experiment and been a little disappointed with the results? Tell me about it! Please remember that science fair projects should be turned in on February 16th. Parents, you will be able to come in and view projects and placings on February 17th from 9am - 1pm. We hope you can make it!

Maybe the temperatures of the classrooms? Possibly even the brand of marshmallows? Were they both left the same amount of time in the liquid?

Those are really good questions, Mrs. Sloan! We were able to discuss all of these and they really have us thinking deeper now!

Mrs. Sloan made some good points. I would look at those questions and I would also look at this one. Did you pour the liquid over the marshmallows or did you drop it in after the liquid was already poured? I would think that it would dissolve faster if you put the marshmallow in the cup and pour the liquid on top.

That's a thought, Tobey! I checked with Mrs. Watson at lunch and she did the same as me -- just dropped the marshmallow in the cup of liquid.

it was probably the size of the Cups .its important to do the test 3 times because if you don't you might get it wrong. I have never made a hypothesis and got it wrong and was mad at the results of the experiment but this time I was wrong I thought the first one to desolve would be the water but the Vinegar did instead .

Maybe you should do it 3 times so if you make a mistake you can learn and it again rightly I have done a experiment and I was despondent.

I am Disappointed that it did not do any thing but just leve a Stan but the vinegar is the one that changed it left little pieces the water made the mashmello soft and mushy the coke a green Stan at the back the cranberry juice made the mashmello come a part

I agree it could be the brand of marshmallows and the different brands of the liquids. Also, temperature could play a factor since marshmallows melt easily. Maybe we should try different brands of the liquids next time and test the brands as well as what liquid actually melted the marshmallow the fastest.

Mrs Watson probably put hers in the morning and the temperature in her cuold of been different. She could of had a different kind of vinger. You should do it 3 times because they could be not right

Maybe they left the marshmallows in there room longer or they got a cheap kind of marshmallows and they melt and dissolve way faster then ours did the reason that it is so important for you to do the test at least 3 times is because you have to make sure that it works even if it doesn't work the first time because you might have did it wrong the first time and not have noticed it Yes I have been disappointed with my results on a experiment it was the same as the marshmallows but it was gummy bears we used the same liquid And we left it there for two days but it didn't do anything so That's the time I was disappointed

I think it's because she put hers in before we did so they were in there longer than ours. And it's important to test 3 times because you might of did something wrong the first time you did it.And I have did a experiment and was disappointed with the results because the honey never crystallized it just turned into ice so now I have to do a whole new project.

Maybe they had a different tempature than we did in the classroom. Because you may mess up and it's good to try again. No I haven't done an expierement where I have messed up on. Actually I haven't ever done an expiererement in my life. But I would actually like to do an expierement.

I think we Had different results because her room might have been warmer, and we also migh have had a different amount of water and also we could have dropped the marshmallows at different times.I think it is important to do the test at least 3 times so if we are not sure if it is right or not we can see if everytime we do it if we get the same results.I have never done a test and have been disappointed with the results.and if I had it would have been my science experiment on which popcorn poped the most kernels and what brand was it.This is why I think Mrs.Watson had different results for our science project for our classroom.

I think we have different results because I think she put the marshmallows in then she put the drinks in so they dissolved faster then ours and that's why her marshmallows are almost gone and I think the vinegar will dissolve the marshmallow the fastest

The first reason that Mrs.Watson put the marshmallows in before Mrs.Burnette and her marshmallow dissolves the fastest is the vingar because it the dissolved the fastest in both of the class
